My nephew (who's not from the U.S.) found it odd that "everyone" at Williams wanted to be a Wall Streeter....surely a generalisation but that's what he said.

I believe that "DKE" is being a little out of line. This is a place to post your own opinions of certain topics. These happen to be my views on Trinity College and I am not saying EVERYONE acts this way, but it is the majority. I did not denounce any of the other colleges to warrant such a harsh response. And FYI many people seem to be confused as to the definition of prep, so instead of running to the nearest dictionary, I attempted to put down an accuate discription of what a prep is in my mind, through my experiences. Im sorry if i offended anyone, but seriously this board is for everyone to post their own views. Some need to accept and acknowledge this factor.

p.s. I like Amg345 as this person understands differences in opinions!!!

preppy schools in NE: trinity, conn college, colgate, bc (along with many others, but these are the ones i know for sure)

in the south: (see dogstreet's list, they have it covered, along with whomever mentioned SMU)

while there are definitely people who dress differently at all of these schools, the preppy style definitely prevails. another must-have for a preppy girl is a vera bradley bag (or collection...). you will see people carrying them everywhere at a lot of these schools.

"p.s. I like Amg345 as this person understands differences in opinions!!!"

Translation: "I like Amg345 because he agrees with me!!!" No offense, of course.

AMG345 and patientlywaiting hit the nail on the head. All the preps I know (including me) are Republican also.....I don't know why people are irked (or is it erked, or is that even a word) by preps. And it seems that no matter where you go, there are people fighting (to varying degrees) prepiness. Even at my school, known for being preppy, there is a small group of people that just CANNOT seem to live with the polo and khakis (tie and sport coat on Mon.) dress code and insist on wearing worn out, "vintage" punk clothes and speak badly of anyone who isn't punkish. Flips collar up

Anyway.....I know DePauw was briefly mentioned as being preppy. I'm going there next year, and on my overnight, it did not seem as preppy as I thought it would be. My host mentioned, though, that it was a little more "casual" than usual when I visited and that it is generally much preppier (and I didn't even bring it up). My CC knew that I was looking for a more preppy sort of school........Just how preppy is DePauw?

there are diff kinds of preppiness and thats whats confusing ppl here. theres old money preppiness vs new money preppiness. old money preps generally wear non flashy clothes (with expensive labels, no doubt) and dont flaunt as much. the waspiest people are also some of the cheapest, and its not uncommon to see many an old money prep shlepping around in sweaters with holes in them and scuffed loafers. of course, both cost a fortune, but still. these ppl generally reside in NE enclaves lol, and go to unis and LACs in the north east. the new money preps are the ones in jcrew etc. popped collars = decidedly new $$, no one with a name to uphold would commit such an atrocity. ;) these people are a little less, shameless, shall we say. they love flashy cars designer labels on the fronts of their shirts (tacky!!!) and tiffanys jewelery. these ppl tend to go to the southern universities like emory and vandy etc.

these are subtle yet important differences, haha, hope i cleared everything up and hopefully didnt offend too many people in the process. ;)

Swarthmore's not all female

i completely disagree about preps being republicans. down where i live the majority of them are, but these kids arent that rich. if you go up to new england, you meet some rich, and i mean rich, kids. theres no doubt in my mind that the north is much wealthier in the south, look at places like Nantucket, which are just summer homes

the preppiest kids ive ever met were all from new england boarding schools and diehard democrats. imitation preps are lots of times new money and tend to vote republican

yeah i would have to agree (even though its a big generalisation)

I'm extremely preppy (or so my friends say) and I'm a democrat....But preppy schools would definately include Emory, Furman, Davidson, Vandy, Ole Miss and to some extent UGA! (btw-I don't want to go to any of these schools)

tcolgatge, I agree with you on the New England boarding schol thing..New England is very liberal, thus the preps are going to be liberal. Here in St. Louis though, the old money tend to be preppy and republican.....I did a summer program at Washington and Lee, and it was the same deal.......I guess it depends on the region of the country you live in and what school you go to, like fut18000.

i live in New England, and I must say that most preps are republican. Not to say, however, that they all are; but most definitely are.

if you know how to mix in the Banana Republic, Polo etc... with the Prada, Gucci, Armani, Burberry etc... consider yourself a true prep.

How about if consider them feckless creatures more concerned with superficial style instead of substance instead? There are a lot of empty suits in the world...don't become one of them.
