pink is nice- why pink on pink?

I have to agree about the south, even though I've lived in New England all my life. The few times I have been south the people have been very nice. Us New Englander tend to keep to ourselves, but of course there are exceptions to every rule. My daughter will most likely go to college in Texas- she enjoyed her vist there- weather, people.

Princeton is pretty preppy I heard :-p. Also some of the LACs are as well...

Wow, you guys realy have no clue about Georgetown. I visited, and it was very normal, most kids were wearing sweatshirts with "Georgetown" on them. The international population is large also. It is not "preppy"

My vote goes to Princeton.

yeah Princeton is very preppy. Many are wealthy. In fact a friend of mine is going there and his family consists of heads of a few Fortune 500 companies

Lots of the Boston area schools are preppy as well. Bentey, Babson, BU, BC, Harvard etc... Reason being is that Boston is a great college town with so many different schools. Internationals realize this and they know that they have arguable the best school in the entire United States as well as about a dozen others to cater for each of their needs. Whether it be business specialization at Bentley and Babson or film at Emerson you can't go wrong. Then there is BU which is the ultimate being in the city feel while BC offers a suburb and is catholic.

There are so many options...

how about we talk about schools where everyone has tight jeans, converse all star shoes, listens to emo music, and has buddy holly glasses. hipsters if you will. but dont worry, theyre just being individuals like everyone else

For the love of God will someone please tell me were these schools are on the East Coast......................I need to find my own kind, lol.

"REAL preppy is very old school... we're talking Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, Ralph Lauren, duck rubbers, madras, weejuns, grosgrain belts, Lilly Pulitzer, Sperry, Tretorn, Fair Isle sweaters, plaid.... that's the genuine thing"

you are right on the money - but forgot pearls, camel's hair coats, wellingtons, and actually (before it over glamorized itself...)LLBean.

Old "prep" money types look for value not flash, can even be stodgy in their dress. Most come from families that are resourceful Yankee types who look for value in items and do not buy simply to impress (for who is there worth impressing?) Nor do they brazenly display or brag about their wealth or pedigree - they are too well-bred for that. Good manners include never discussing or showing off how much you have - in fact, you down play it; being polite and courteous (if somewhat distant) to people from all walks of life (dismissing or diminishing people from backgrounds other than yours is crass and definately a sign of, ugh, "new money").

The prep mentality people often discuss on CC and elsewhere is really an attitude adopted by the "new rich" (one or 2 generations back) who lack breeding, are insecure, have affected a dismissive "I am better than you" mentality probably because of their insecurity more than anything (most social climbers are like that.) People who are truly comfortable with their backgrounds never bother diminishing another person, no matter what class you come from.

I have to make a comment about this too. I wish there was a school like that!!!!! I wouldn't be considered weird anymore.

The hipster works just as hard as the nouveau prep to achieve a "look." They are just as likely to look down on ae, a&f sporting kids as the inverse. People choose a "look" to signal their general type. It has become a shortcut to choosing one's cohort. It's a shame because it allows people to judge a book by its cover more easily, thereby further eliminating the possibility of finding common ground. Kids also adopt current trends because it's just easier--do they really have time to work on originating their own style in college? I don't think so! Underneath it all is the desire to fit in--same for all "types."

"A good polo fits in at any school, but it seems to be only the kids with high GPAs and SATs that figure that out."

apparently whether you pop your collar is a sign of your intelligence.

This thread is hilarious and pointed.

top 5:

Colby, Vanderbilt, Davidson, Washington and Lee, and UVA

Dunkaroo -
Yo! You gotta thing for Trinity? Did you get rejected from there or something? Have you even been on the campus in the last three years or do you just rely on the Princeton review for all your information? We got the collar thing, going, like most NE schools - but I'd say Goodwill, Salvation Army and retro seventies are also happening on campus...

yes I've been to the crap hole of CT known as Hartford and yes I've been on Trinity's campus. Trust me the violence thing is true and so are the different types of people...

Dunkaroo - a little defensive here, huh? I don't recall bringing up Hartford and violence in my post - (isn't this thread on"preppiness?") -
But since you did, I will say that Hartford's not the prettiest place to hang out in the US -- but then again, few urban areas are. What you need to know is that the biggest crime stats Trinity faces each year are on cars being broken into - I don't think murder is high on the list. I mean, I'm not watchin' my back every time I head to class, you know?

Where do you go to school anyway? You're such an authority on my school....

Duke is extremely preppy..

Hey, anywhere in the country that you go to you will find "preppy" people and other "trendy" folks. Who really cares what clothes you wear?

Miami University of Ohio aka. JCrew University. it's just a little north of cincinnati and VERY republican.

I disagree. While there are many wealthy families whose kids attend Miami U, it is not expensive and therefore seems to draw in a more diverse crowd. My school sends on average 20 kids out of 100 each year to Miami, and most are not the preppy kids you would expect to find at my school.

Simply based on who has gone there that I know, my vote goes to UVA. For God sakes, Carl Lindner (for non-Cincy kids, the man who owns the Reds, United Dairy Farmers, and used to own Chiquita banana) sent his son there! That speaks for itself.

I went to a prep school for high school, like, seriously, old school prep, right in the middle of Princeton, NJ, and I actually would have to agree with you. The people were all filthy rich, but there really wasn't that contemptuousness that people associate with preppiness.
