I haven't seen many posts regarding the Language Subject SATs. I am curious if anyone here has taken the French SAT II and has any advice on how to prepare for it. Is it really difficult? Is it better to take the test w/ listening or w/out? If anyone has any suggestions, please share. Thanks

i just took it today. cold, i might add. i’m sensing about a 400-500.
i would suggest going over basic grammar and memorizing a lot of vocab.

I also took it today. I thought it was pretty tough, at least more so than the two practice exams I did.

If you know your grammar, that’s a very good start. The grammar questions are always very straight-forward and if you know your stuff you should be able to get just about all of them.

For me, the vocabulary questions were the most difficult. How exactly one should “prep” vocabulary, I don’t really know. My Princeton Review French SAT II book had a huge list, but that would have been a pain to try to memorize. A lot of the words on the list I already new, and most of those I didn’t seemed rather useless, but, again, had I done more than read the list once, it might have been of some use.

The fill-in-the-blanks in passage form can be tricky and really comes down to your comprehension of the passage itself. Becoming better at that is a direct result of reading French. The same applies for the reading comprehension questions. I read a suggestion here somewhere to read Harry Potter in French; a fantastic idea, as it’s something that sounds fun to me having not read the book in ages and having forgotten a lot of the story. I still remember some of the basic and that helps me get through it a little better, but I still have to really focus to comprehend everything. There is a lot of vocabulary that I didn’t really know, and it forces me either to work around no knowing every word (which sharpens your skills for the passage-based questions) or to look up the unknown vocabulary (which very well could appear on the exam).

There are some other threads on this site on the French exam, and I’ll post them when I have to time to find them again.

sadly, i did not get to study for them or use any of the tips suggested. better luck to you.

that test made me very sad haha i studied forever from that princeton review book

The hardest part about the test is vocab… Also, you need to know when to use a verb tense (don’t bother w/ conjugations, everything is already conjugated correctly basically) you just have to fit the right tense in.
I think I got around a 660-680… not that great for me but it’s still pretty decent I think

i’d be ecstatic if i got a 660-680.
strosfan, do you know how the test is curved? i skipped 12 questions and guessed on some.
