Prepping help!! slow reader and bad with vocab!

i'm going to be a junior this year
and im doing poorly on the verbal section of sat
around (500-650 for writing and reading)
however i think its mostly because of my lack of speed
i dont finish on time sometimes and im bad at vocab
the sent comp. is really hard for me

for speed: do you recommend that i just do many many
practice tests?

for vocab: im currently studying off a list (barrons)
do u think i should do so? or is barrons too long?
should i use word smart or are there better ways to enhance my vocab?

overall: which do you recomend that i study using? barrons kaplan princeton? or all?
or JUST the collegeboard book? which ones exactly should i use to study?
is just repeating the tests over and over fro the cb book is best?
correct me if im wrong. is that really all i need to do?

I used Princeton Review (granted, I only did one practice test), and I was very happy with it. To improve your speed, you might have to change the way you approach the passages. I would always skim them the first time, read the questions, and return to the passage to search for the answer if necessary. I found that no matter how closely I read the passage the first time, I always had to go back, so skimming before reading the questions made sense. If this doesn't work for you, you might try reading all of the questions first and then reading the passage. Either way, you could give yourself less than the allotted time when you practice to make yoruself speed up.

For speed you should do more practice and also read more. Read your local newspaper and a few magazine articles, trying to capture the major ideas in the articles.

For vocab: I liked Word Smart, even though I knew most of the words. It's a pretty good list. Barrons' list is okay too. It helps to use the words in everday conversation.

You sound really stressed out. Improvement is just not making the same mistakes over and over again.

these are good advices

Judging by the above post, I'm guessing that English is not your native language. Tell your friends to correct your grammar whenever you make a mistake. It may make them uncomfortable at first, but it will improve your writing score. Your post should have read "This is good advice." :)

thanks.. haha but i am a native speaker.. just didnt read a lotta books.. my writing scores the highest right now (dont need to worry bout it).. but i usually end up not finishing all of the cr section.. cuz im sucha slow readerr.. and i tend to use a lotta slang on the internet.. sorry my bad.. i just need to know how to get my vocab and speed up

:o Um...my bad.

Wow@ Weasel... for one grammar misusage (is that a word) on the INTERNET...

But yeah, um for vocab my cousin looked at the list of most frequently appeared SAT words or something like that. Reading, go at your own pace. I think you should follow their advice since I can only offer the experiences of people I know, since I won't take it for another 1~2 years (junior~senior).

haha any more suggestions for my speed problem?

i read an article about the good readers. Their eyes move very fastly and blink ^ ^ . So i think you should pratise reading more and faster by reading with the books you are interested in first. You should care how yours eyes moving when reading.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to sort of skim Anna Karenina right now, but still understand what's going on in the story.

Being able to read with speed is a challenge for a lot of students who do not regularly post on CC. Regular practice is an excellent strategy along with vocabulary practice and memorization.
