Lol, sorry I sounded defensive! I badly pointed out that people should shop around instead of impulse buying. My town is full of hippies (bad garage sales) and the mall is terrible. When I visit relatives, I buy stuff there for dirt compared to my mall’s prices. Kohl’s is nice, my town only has a Dicks (although Sports Authority is better-priced). What state do you live in?

Polo & the Ralph Lauren store waaaaay overpriced. If they sell stuff at 1/5 of the retail pricv in outlets and still an turn a generous profit, then there is a serious problem.

@smiley: At outlet strores, everything is laid out just as it would be in a department store. Those major sales in malls are nice too :]

^large midwest metropolitan area (for a couple more weeks). So that explains the quality of garage sales here. It’s generally middle-upper class people getting rid of unwanted stuff. So it’s kinda like hand-me-downs. I’d go to outlets because I like new polo and adidas and stuff, but the closest one is 1 hour plus away (2 in traffic).

Oh, that’s the reason then. I suppose that most of those people take care of the clothes and aren’t wackos. My town is full of weirdos, it’s like automatic LOL-nation (if that make sense) ;)

Closest outlets are a few hours away, but my extended family (really far away; 7+ hours) has a nice outlet center that has unbelievable deals with like all of the brands I wear. I’m lucky that those outlets exist lol because they’re the best I’ve ever been to.

I don’t know- I think preppy is a stereotype like “jock” or “dork”. A lot of the brands you listed, I liked because they’re classics- you can wear them anytime; they’re sort of time-less. They’re always in fashion. Almost anyone who goes to a “top” school might look preppy, but it doesn’t mean they are.

Having said that, RL is too over the top for me. I don’t like a lot of their stuff. Armani Exchange seems sort of like a pumped up Hollister. Their shirts with flower designs or bird designs look really ridiculous to me. RL has really nice pants though.

BigDreamer:
“The most expensive thing I have purchased in the last few years are Colehaan dress shoes & a Ralph Lauren suit. I buy Lacoste shorts for $20-30, Lacoste shirts for $25-40, Polo jeans (original $115+) for less than $35.”

BigDreamer, where in the world do you get authentic Lacoste clothes for that price?

Well it gets annoying when people bring up threads from months ago lol…

but to answer your question:

@Beweezy:

I buy them from the factory outlet stores, it is NEVER worth it to buy the clothes from malls anymore. I mean I seriously got everything at unbelievably low prices, so low that it would almost seem foolish not to buy them lol! Yeah, the outlet stores are remarkably less expensive; same with Burberry outlets, great deals haha.

I read the first and second pages so this doesnt hav to do with anything any one is saying anymore, just wanted to get my opinion out there…
ali12, i think that preppy depends on ones opinion, and sometimes that means the opposite of the what the dictionary says. Some people may think that Aero, Hollister, Lacoste are VERY preppy. also, no offense, but i think your kindof scolding wat other people think because i noticed a lot of people defending themselves…

Hollister and Aero and Abercrombie are preppy. And, to me, anyway, rather uncomfortable. I’m not sure if it’s possible for the smell of clothes to make a person uncomfortable, but that explains part of what I feel.

Although I do like rugby shirts, even if they are preppy. Better than hoodies. I have collected quite a few, but not from Ralph Lauren or anything like that. From places, mostly.

As much as people may not like this, being a Prep is different from being a typical stereotype. Yes, it can depend on ones opinion, but being a ‘true prep’ mostly comes from birth. The way your parents were raised, how you were raised, etc. Preps normally go to boarding or prep schools, and continue to ivy league schools. They are not people that slack on their work or education. Posers are people that wear A&F and Hollister and so on, wear tons of makeup are load and snobby. Don’t get me wrong A&F and Hollister are great but mostly all preps don’t wear it. Preppy style does not include skin tight clothing and big logos stretched across their clothes. Secondly, preppy people are not snobs. They are classy and polite. They come from well off families and usually have old money. They do not flaunt their money, posers do. Sorry, i had to express my opinion LOL.
Anyway, brands that preps wear are J. Crew, Vineyard Vines, Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Brooks Brothers, Kate Spade, Lilly Pulitzer and Marcels Calvet. hope that helped…

To answer the original question preppy clothes include such brands:
Ralph Lauren
Vineyard Vines
Brooks Brothers
J. Crew
Lacoste
Southern Proper (for those from the south)
Anything from the Andover Shop

Types of clothes include:
Sweaters
Madras (Pants, Shorts, Blazers)
Seersucker (Pants, Shorts, Shirts)
Loafers (Topsiders)
Polos
Button Down Shirts (NEVER Short Sleeves)
Multi Colored belts (D-Ring or traditional)
Leather Sandals

To talk about the “prep” lifestyle that so many people want to speculate about I will try to prove, or disprove anything about the prep style as a whole.

I went to boarding school from grades 6 - 12. (I was a day student) I also currently coach at a boarding school as well.

So I have lived through this whole lifestyle. You do NOT need to be “rich” to appear preppy. However you do need to invest in clothing (listed above) to keep up appearances. Clothing in numbers is very popular at prep schools. Having polos (Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines, Lacoste, etc) in every color under the rainbow is normal. People don’t have 3 or 4, more like 30+. Multiple shirts, pants, shorts, sandals, ties, sweaters and blazers is also a must.

I’m not a true prep because half my clothes are swimming related… But from living in Princeton here’s a list of brands:
lacoste
Calvin Klein
emporio Armani
Ralph Lauren
Brooks brothers
burberry
j crew
and by a long stretch sometes even bannana republic can work

I just noticed all the prep school references and that’s a complete lie… I go to one of the best public schools in the country and people here are exactly what you’d find in a prep school. Or maybe that’s just because I’m in Princeton I dunno

Madras skirts from Basil Leaf (Atlantis Clothing) are great too, for that absolute preppy look.I mean, nothing says it better than patchwork plaid right?See them here:
