"Preppy" Clothing

clothes preps wear:

ralph lauren
lilly
jcrew
brooks brothers
THE ANDOVER SHOP (old school prep)
J. PRESS (old school preps)
Vineyard vines (for neckwears)
Bill's Khakis
Lacoste (for the more laid back preps)

They absolutely don't wear AF or AE, or Hollister, or Aero....

I didn't mean to offend anyone, I was just trying to help harmon write his/her paper. Wearing hollister/Abercrombie doesn't mean youre lower middle class, it just means your not a true prep. Abercrombie is by no means cheap, and I know tons of wealthy kids who wear clothes from not preppy brands. Not every wealthy teen chooses to dress preppy, and you don't have to be "upper class" in order to be preppy.

Yea, can anyone say outlet malls? Especially in Orlando, you can get preppy clothes for relatively cheap prices like Polo Ralph Lauren. But most kids at my school consider Hollister and American Eagle as the definition of preppy, as most kids at my school aren't rich enough or don't have the time to drive all the way out to I-Drive to buy there clothes. That's all the closest mall has, Abercrombie probably would be popular but it's a good 45-50 minutes away. I guess southern schools don't have very high preppy ratios, we have more rednecks and Fubu wannabes (and the real things lol) than anything.

AX is another one.

Not offended at all, don't worry :) Just commenting on the nature of the thread, or something.

FUBU??? who the hell wears that anymore...I'm black and haven't worn FUBU since like 2000...lol where do you live?

but yea...how in the world can anyone consider friggin AE or Abercrombie preppy? absurd...

My aunt (very Boston prep aunt) gave me this funny preppy handbook. It gave all these rules and traditions that were both true and humorous.

"AX is another one."

NO.

i consider myself a true prep...i wear j.crew, polo, lacoste, vinyard vines (belts) brooks brothers and lily pulitzer...a true prep wears clothes that will never go out of style. its kinda weird though, i grew up in the midwest but am still a huge prep, probably cause my moms from CT and she always had me wear preppy stuff.

A "prep" isn't someone who just wears preppy clothing. To be a true prep, you must live in New England, not the midwest or the west coast. You must be wealthy. You must attend a boarding school. And, I doubt any of you conform to these ideals.

Who said you had to be wealthy. trademark

well prepchick is from connecticut and might be wealthy and go to a boarding school

Yeah but you don't have to be wealthy to go to a boarding school.

Things you buy in a mall are, generally, not preppy. Preppy means moneyed.

Preppy:
Ralph Lauren
Brooks Brothers
Lacoste
Burberry
Ferragamo
Banana Republic
Juicy and Tommy Bahama are quickly becoming members of this group as well.
J. Crew and Gap to a much lesser extent

Not Preppy:
Abercrombie & Fitch
Hollister
American Eagle
Express Men (used to be Structure)
...and most anything you'd find in a mall that's not in a department store.

"Who said you had to be wealthy. trademark"

Preppy means wealthy. It means you wear $80 polo shirts like undershirts and have no questions about buying a $500 pair of shoes, or corduroy pants with dolphins on them.

I'm not saying you can't appear to be preppy without money, but the whole idea of preppy clothes is that rich people at country clubs wear them while golfing.

Well I guess I just don't know what preepy is huh? :p (whisper) like you do. :p

hm... although a lot of preps do, you don't have to go to a boarding school. private prep school yes, but it doesn't have to be a boarding school

"Preps are often misjudged and wrongly labled. People often label preps as stuck up, self conceited and arrogant, thinking of themselves as better than others and thus looking down upon them. Though that is definately NOT the case. Preps as a group are generally extremely kind, caring, respectful, not snobby, considerate and polite people." -Urban Dictionary.
Telling people they are not true preps because they are not wealthy or do not live in the northeast does not set this example of being "considerate." Also, most people would not consider Juicy to be preppy since it is too flashy and trendy and less classic.

So is being a prep more to do with:
a)how you dress [LL Bean, RL, BR, Lacoste, etc. etc.]
or
b)your lifestyle [boarding school, being a deb, being upper-class, having a wealthy lifestyle]
or
c)your attitude [being polite and respectful]
?

Being a prep has to do with all of those, but this thread was originally focused on the clothing aspect.
