^^good to know! i go to a regular old public school and my dad drives a 7 year old camry..i only learned last year of his income (more then i expected) .. as a middle schooler i sometimes wish that my family 'showed off' a little bit more, but i'm starting to realize how stupid the whole AF craze is.. it's all marketing! anyways, after reading this thread i'm glad we don't flaunt wealth. thanks for the insight everyone!!

I definantly consider myself preppy. I'm going to Choate for high school. I play tennis everyday in the summer at our exclusive country club. My favorite store is a boutique by where I live called Rugby by Ralph Lauren. I have a closet full of madras, oxfords, polos, Vinyard Vines belts. casmere sweaters, ect. I come from a family of old money. I never leave the house without my pearl studs. I know I'm only in 8th grade, but this is what is considered to be preppy. Even when I was a baby I was still wearing polos, pleated skirts, and colorful belts. I love being preppy and I don't understand why people confuse preppy with the trashy styles of AE, A&F, hollister, and aeropastel. these aren't preppy, there're only trashy. All my friends are preppy and we would never wear any of those things. One of my pet peaves is fake preps who live in trailor parks. To be preppy you must go to a private school out east that costs around $30K per kid, per year.

^you sound like the most obnoxious person known to man :)

J. Crew <3

most preps are pretty lame...i'm not gonna lie....but then again, I come from a pretty crappy area, where there are only preps and gangsters....in between means you're just the norm. I guess i'm the norm. First off, of course, the real preps are the rich golfers...the fake preps are the preps we know and love today, the shagadelic abercrombie people...popped or unpopped collars...hang out only with each other, whatever. I work at American eagle....it's not that preppy, but i can get pretty uncomfortable when 5 or 6 guys walk in with popped collars and I woke up about 15 minutes before I had to go to work and put on whatever button up shirt was nearest me....

I wear some AE and Hollister stuff, but don't consider myself to be a prep. I just like the polos, not so much the regular t shirts.

AE, A&F, Hollister, Aeropastle are all high school kid clothes and are NOT preppy no matter what people in your high school say. Anybody out of high school wearing these clothes will not impress anybody.

Real preppy clothes are RL, lacoste, birkenstock, etc.

More like middle school kid clothes.

While I agree with almost everyone's posts on this thread, everyone is saying the same thing.

"AF, AE, etc. = not preppy" "J. Crew, Lacoste, Brooks Brothers, etc. = preppy"

Saying it again and again is unnessecary. Why does this thread of 9 pages??

That's not really an accurate statement. These stores' demographic and most of the people who wear these brands are high schoolers. I really don't follow your logic.

stylishbaybeevw, there are def preppy kids that live in other places besides the east coast and you dont have to pay 30k a year at priv school either.
Also I echo Greendayfan's remarks and also want to add that i HATE it when guys pop there collars and put a bunch of product in there hair. I pretty much want to hit them in the face.
From my expiriance with preppy kids, however, Ive learned that they arent all the same. Some, like the popped collers and, although im not sure, stylishbaybeevw, take themselves way to seriously and are frankly spoiled brats. Some, on the other hand, still where preppy clothes and stuff but dont pop there collars or try to show everyone how rich they are.

I'm pretty sure that stylishbaybeevw is a troll. Just look at her username. If I'm wrong about that, sorry stylishbaybeevw... kind of... I think I'm sorry, at least...?

Abercrombie?! Whatever happened to J. Crew? The classic preppy look for girls (that I still wear) is pleated plaid skirts, a white shirt and sweater vest, kneesocks and penny loafers.

Why did we bring this thread up?

i almost thought stylishbabeevw's post was real

god i'm so stupid

LOL, this whole thread made me think of a kid I took SAT subject tests w/. He was wearing khakis and a button up shirt with a blue and yellow plaid sweater over it. I'm cool with the whole preppy look thing, except for the fact he' in freakin Montana!!

i'll add Ruehl to the expensive/trashy list. it's a new brand from a&f, just opened at the mall here. 60 dollar polos.. (not that that's even bad compared to some others)

Ruehl looks like it sucks. if you're going to drop that much on a polo (which is just fine) at least make it a good one like lacoste or ralph lauren.

I never really considered myself a prep until recently when I realized that our school was really a private school (an expensive one without FA at that) and even though our family's not very rich, we can afford the good things in life (i'm incredibly grateful now, but it's hard to express that in something daily and common as talking to your family or friends)
And I still don't think I'm really a prep, but I guess I dress like it?

Anyways when you get into prep schools you realize that aside from the generic A&F stuff (sorry to call it generic, I know how expensive the clothes can get but here everybody owns SOMETHING from a&f) people wear hoodies, skinny jeans, or bootcut jeans that are tight (but the skinny people usually pull off wearing "baggy" pants), or something conservative and simple, like a T-shirt and a pair of jeans (unless it shows that the jeans themselves are tacky, the brand doesn't really matter. but I think we all know what's a True Religion or Integrity for Humanity)

Course, boarding schools and private schools in other places very ;D

My school is private, but not everyone is preppy, actually. My friends are preppy, and I guess I'm semi-preppy, but my friend told me I'm not since I don't "talk like a prep" or really wear preppy clothes much (although, it's a uniform school, so it doesn't matter).

I wear stuff from Abercrombie, Hollister, Old Navy (this isn't preppy of me), and a bunch of random places, but my style is more relaxed. My friends shop at all the above (except Old Navy) and Juicy Catoure (for clothes, but I find the clothes so expensive), Ruehl (well, one friend), and American Eagle.
