"Preppy" Clothing

niceeee responses guuyyyys

Don't preppy people generally wear khaki pants or chinos? Wouldn't that rule out brands like Abercrombie?

thats faux-preppy. abercrombie/hollister/american eagle is all that, just because you wear a popped polo once in awhile doesn't mean you're preppy.

the key to preppy is well-put-together, and sharp-cut
preppy:

khakis
ll bean (duck boots + moccasins!)
straight-cut jeans
no flashy brands
polos
cardigans
sweaters
button-down shirts
pearls (girls)
monogramming is uber-preppy
bright colors (the preps i know are like walking rainbows)
cable sweaters
ralph lauren

basically, the essential preppy look can be very bright and dressed up at times, but it's basically a sportsy look, since most preps live in new england, and it's mostly freaking cold in new england. so real preps are never extremely dressed up; they're very simple, and their clothing is very non-gender - hunting-like apparel and pullovers, etc.

comfort + simplicity is key to genuine preppiness

i simply can't stand these in-your-face preps who feel the need to don pearls and pink every single day of the week. i call it the obnoxious prep that's almost as wannabe-prep as abercrombie.

i am personally not preppy, but i know a couple of TRUE preps - and while she does look like a preppy parody at times, with lilly pulitzer at formal events, etc. - mostly she looks low-key with ll bean clothing.

this is such a dumb thread. wear whatever the hell you want and don't label it. & i went to ruehl the other day and i agree that it is ridiculous..

oh & has anyone heard of Free People? i went in there the other day as well. it was very unique stuff but it was so darn expensive!

Free People has pretty clothes, but I agree that they're all very expensive. I go on eBay and I can find new Free People clothes (from last season) for ~25 dollars.

Ruehl has the best sales, though. Same w/ A&F. I'm not going to pay full-price there to look like everything else, but if there's a sale, I might as well stock up on the basics. The quality's not bad.

i know people have mentioned it before but I can't emphasize enough how ruehl, af, ae, etc. and other mall brands are NOT preppy. j.crew, polo, lacoste, vineyard vines, brooks brothers, and some of the lesser knowns are true preppy in terms of clothing. now no one is really a "prep" unless they have the complete prep lifestyle (not just clothing). I wear a lot of j.crew, polo etc but I don't dress too preppy because I usually mix it up with diesel, my nudie skinny jeans, band tees, etc. However, I can definitely (and a fair amount of the time) do put a full preppy outfit together. I own almost no ruehl/hollister etc besides a couple items as gifts etc.

all my clothes are from j. crew.

What do you guys mean by "mall brands"? We have lacoste/brooks brothers and ae/af/hollister stores in the same mall

OK, most people don't have lacoste at the mall.

but I think we all know what's a True Religion or Integrity for Humanity

[/quote]

lol i think you mean Citizens of Humanity.

I always knew I was preppy, but I never knew how preppy I was until recently when I drove by Harvard (I live near it) and was dress almost exactly the same as most of the students :P

lol Integrity for humanity. hahahahahaha

lol, yeah, i didn't understand "preppy" until i walked inside the bergdorf goodman on 5th avenue while i was on vacation..

sure, yes, american eagle is preppy... rolls eyes

haha I agree. I just mentioned Ruehl b/c it was mentioned previously.

I don't really get why A&F and Hollister are considered prep... I'm pretty sure most prep school kids don't shop there.

abercrombie&fitch and hollister aren't REAL prep btw

...hence the point of my post.

a true prep wears clothes that never go out of style, in classic colors. i consider myself a prep: i'm from westchester, NY, i shop at ralph lauren, lilly's, vineyard vines, and j.crew, and most of my family went to private schools (i wanted to go to public so i changed from private right before high school)... even though it may sound like i am obsessed with labels... i still wear clothes from middle school, since they never go out of style, and a lot of my clothes are my mom's old ones. classic cardigans, headbands, and the "natural" look are key... most of my friends who are preps and i agree that top designer labels are not important... just good quality clothing and a clean look

In my school, "preppy" is generally conceived as wearing Abercrombie, American Eagle, or Hollister, having long blonde or brown perfectly straightened hair(or maybe hair in a ponytail, not bun), lots of makeup(of course the black eyeliners, and applies lip gloss every 10 minutes), kinda on the quiet side and hangs out with their own "preppy" clique. And lots wear those hemp looking brownish necklaces or bracelets... They are supposed to be "preppy".. that's the term here.

I love those Ralph Lauren/Lacoste polos.. very adorable but unfortunately I don't own any. It's outta my budget.

Would you consider Tommy Hilfiger as preppy?

In my school it doesn't matter because we are grown ups!

being from ct and shopping at the same places as eiei, i completely agree with eiei's post
