And by preppie I don't mean Abercrombie and Fitch, low cut, slutty preppy, I mean old-school preppy. Mostly I'm just trying to use one adjective to describe a school that is anything but alternative and/or hippie. Think a school that is NOT Oberlin, Reed, Bennington etc.

I don't want to go to a school where the norm is to have multiple piercings, tattoos, crazy hair and so on. But I'm not a prude either; I don't want a SUPER conservative school where they have a knee-length, long-sleeve kinda dress code. And I'm cool with partying :) I still want an intellectual crowd, just without all the alternativeness.

My grades are good and my SAT scores around 2200 so I'm looking at some fairly selective schools but feel free to suggest any schools you think would fit this description. I have some EC but none that I'm considering in my college search.

If it makes any difference I'm also European (but applying from an American school)

You really have a lot of extreme ideas about schools here .How about Duke or something in the south ? Try googling Preppy Colleges and Universities .

@fauxmaven: What do you mean extreme? I don’t think I have any extreme ideas; they come from knowing current students at various schools, and from having visited (in some cases overnight) several American colleges and Universities. I have also tried googling, but you can’t always trust that, I wanted some more personal opinions.

@mom2collegekids: Yes I am a Junior. My school doesn’t give GPAs nor rank but I have about a 50/50 ratio of As and B+s, but going up. I’m actually expecting 2 of my B+ do be at least A- at the end of the year. I also attend a private prep-school so a B here means more than a B in many other places.

I’m not sure what I want to study yet but I’m thinking something in law/law-enforcement or business. I’d rather attend a school that offers all of these.

I already have a scholarship that will cover some financial needs but might need up to 20k a year additionally.

@SeattleBulldog: Yes I have seen that list, I just don’t know how trustworthy it is. I actually really like Georgetown :)

"I’m not sure what I want to study yet but I’m thinking something in law/law-enforcement or business. I’d rather attend a school that offers all of these.

Is this a scholarship from your country? If you need “up to $20k” per year additionally, then does that mean that your scholarship is for $140k ($35k per year)? If not, then you’ll need more money for schools like Georgetown and other privates.

You need to find out which schools give aid to int’ls. Most schools do not give much/any aid to int’ls. A small number “meet need”, some give “some aid”, and some give merit scholarships.

And, if you have a scholarship, that will get put towards your need, but your family may still be expected to pay its share. Do you know how much your family will pay?

For instance…at Georgetown:

“Financial aid for international students is limited, but Georgetown offers a small number of need-based scholarships for selected first-year international students who demonstrate financial need. More information about these scholarships is available through the*Office of Student Financial Services.”

Since you already have a scholarship, it’s unknown if G’town will give you any more…or if they’ll determine that your scholarship “meets need” or if the school will just gap you.

Since you have a merit scholarship, you might consider finding a couple of schools that will give you another large merit scholarship to supplement that one…those schools can be safeties for you.

Oh I know, I have a college counselor who is very much on top of all those technicalities. My scholarship is an international one, but not one all that many people would now–a prep-school to college scholarship.

But I don’t really need to look at that at this point, what I really need are just some ideas and/or confirmation of schools fitting my criteria.

Some schools that I’m looking at are all the Ivies, Williams, U-Chicago, Amherst, Pomona, Claremont McKenna, Duke, Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Middlebury, Tufts, Vassar, Washington and Lee, Connecticut College, Macalester, U-Michigan, Occidental, Trinity, St Lawrence, St Olafs, NYU

I can figure out the financial things on my own, what I want is a more up-to-date, honest perspective on the social aspects of these colleges(and others) than a college counselor can provide.

University of Chicago is not preppy. Vassar is quite alternative (multiple piercings, experimentation).
However, Trinity, Duke, Miami of Ohio, Amherst, UVA, Middlebury–all yes’es.
You can get a “traditional college experience” at Michigan and it has a nice campus, but I wouldn’t describe it as preppy.
As for the Ivies, Princeton & Dartmouth yes, Columbia definitely NOT. Nor do I consider Yale a preppy haven.
NYU is hoodies and jeans.
This is purely my own opinion, not meant to offend anyone.

@Kittenygoodness: Well as you have just said it seems certain types of people apply/go to certain kinds of schools. And I think it does matter, I have a friend who used to go to Colby and wasn’t happy there at all, moved to another school that was completely different socially and is now so much more happy than before. I haven’t even decided what I want to study yet but I know it will be something pretty general like Law or Business so I’m not looking at that aspect quite yet.

Thanks for your input on the schools, it really helps to know this kind of stuff when deciding to apply, even if it wouldn’t be a deciding factor. About Vassar: I’ve heard that they’ve become less alternative recently, maybe that’s just a myth…

@M’s Mom: They don’t have to be NE, I actually really like some schools in the South, like Georgetown(not really in the South) and Duke. I’ve heard that Bowdoin is a bit hippie/artsy, is that not true?

Yeah I’m leaning towards crossing out Vassar, NYU and U-Chicago. Macalester and Columbia are pretty close to being dropped too.

Is Yale really all that non-preppy? I always just assumed it was REALLY preppy 'cause Blair on Gossip Girl really wanted to go there and she is like the epitome of preppy (I know not that reliable…)
