Preppy is the best style...agree or disagree?

Just want some opinions/discussions on this topic. I'm a straight preppy guy and find that I get more respect from teachers dressing "respectably" to school than my friends who wear sweats and tees. I've made a small guideline that I've posted in a few other threads in the past, so please critique if you feel necessary! Also, I'd really like it if female users also posted to validate/invalidate anything that's being said.

Guys: PREPPY IS ALWAYS THE BEST. Some people say you look like a dbag, but honestly, you don't. The misconception is that preppy guys are the ones who wear extra-tight ANF shirts with spiked hair and baggy cargo shorts. WRONGGGG. Preppy guys are those who keep things clean:

Summer:
A crisp polo (by brands such as Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Vineyard Vines, and Lacoste) without an undershirt or an OCBD with your shirt tucked in
Chino shorts that fall 1-2 inches ABOVE the knee and have NO cargo pockets in a variety of colors
Sperries are a MUST (stick to the A/Os or Mako-2 Eyes)

Winter:
An OCBD (Oxford Cloth Button Down) by said brands that is tapered (the brands above all offer slim fit options on their button downs, so there is no excuse to go to ANF/HcO/AE)
Straight Leg, raw denim jeans with absolutely NO frays anywhere (including pocket lining) or slim-fit (NO pleats) chino pants (NO cargo pockets/frays anywhere)
High-top Sperries (obviously with the pant leg falling over the ankle part of the shoe, don't pull a gangsta move and tuck your pant leg into your shoe tongue) or Clarks Desert Boots
If you want, throw a good-quality sweater over your OCBD. Polos should stay in the closet.

As far as accessories go, keep it at a minimum.
Belts: stick to the needlepoint belts (traditional brown leather buckle but a cloth body).
Ties: always go for the Repp tie
Shoes: ALWAYS, if you're tucking your shirt in, match your belt color to your shoe color. Pet peeve.
NEVER get your ear pierced, a tattoo, or anything that you'd find on Jersey Shore.

I'm making this a separate line because it's SO important: NEVER EVER EVER wear socks of any kind with Sperries if wearing shorts. I want to beat the **** out of guys that do that, it disrespects the classiness of the boat shoes and turns them into Nike trainers.

In essence, you want to keep your look clean and professional. It's been found in studies that women are more attracted to clean-cut, preppy men than those who wear Ed Hardy tees.

****This style does not require spending a ton of money. Retail prices for these articles of clothing are ridiculous, but just wait til the end of the season and pick them up on sale (I cop Ralph Lauren polos, retail $75, for under $20). This is what I do, and trust me, it works. Just be patient and keep an open eye while taking advantage of department store sales, etc.

I don’t dress preppy but I dress appropriately and respectably.

PS- I’ve never paid more than $20 for any article of clothing.

Style is subjective. As a person who attends prep school, I agree that preppy clothes, when done right, are very classy, but there are other styles that are just as nice.

But the OP was [sort of] right on the price thing. I mean, preppy clothes aren’t cheap, but you can always find them on sale/used at good prices, and even if you end up spending more than you’re used to on them, they never go out of style and they’re made to last [Sperry’s don’t die… except mine did because i wore them for most of the year for 3 years…]

Style is definitely subjective. Sure, “preppy” clothes can be more impressive for certain jobs and women, but definitely not all. If you want respect in a business class, sure. If you want respect in a creative fashion or theatre class, that’s really not your best or most convenient ensemble. I, as a female student, find the preppy look to be incredibly boring and unattractive. I prefer to dress a bit rock ‘n’ roll, and like it when guys do the same. I like seeing both guys and girls in black skinnies, edgy (but CLEAN) hair styles, vests over Ts or tanks, (p)leather, eyeliner, funky patterns, bold colors… It’s down to personal preference as much as other art forms. Not one clothing style can truly be considered the best because it’s all in the eye of the beholder.

I’m suprised people go for specific styles. I just buy what I like and what is clean.
(I also own 3 pairs of Sperrys) ;)

That’s what I do UVA!

What are sperry’s?

They are boat shoes. I’m not sure how to describe it - A mix of dress shoe and slipper? I don’t know about anyone else, but I personally think they are the most comfortable shoe on earth.

^truth. i need to replace mine though… they look like this except dirtier, i tie my laces in barrel knots, and the insole is worn through

Oh I’ve seen those. Some are really cute

Disagree…

Agreed about the Sperrys! Although they are on the high $$$ side, they are long lasting, classy, and impossibly comfy!

Agree with the OP, especially on the sweatpants and:

Hahaha. This is cute.

I love my Sperry’s. :D

Just wanna throw this out there, but one of the main reasons I dress preppy, as stated by another user, is that it NEVER goes out of style and the clothing is long lasting. I’ve purchased a few Express tees and after a couple washes they lose shape and are pretty much unwearable, not to mention the fact that in a few years they’ll be “out of style”; however, polos/OCBS will last me for many years and will always look classy no matter where I am.

I have 3 pairs of Sperrys (2 regular, 1 chukka boot) and I’ve been able to wear 1 of them since Freshman year and they still hold up perfectly, sole is 100% intact, and they’ve been through hell and back (ignore the rhyme lol). Also, they tend to look better as they age/get dirty etc, whereas Jordans and Nikes start looking like crap after they get a little dirty.

Lol I actually get a TON of compliments from the girls at my schools because I don’t go for that ******y bro-look(obnoxiously tight ANF polo, cargo shorts, long Nike socks, Sperrys) or bum-look(tees and sweats) that a lot of guys go for. Feels pretty damn good haha

This is so stupid…

Lol… OP kind of sounds like a fashion elitist. Oh please, there aren’t any rules to wearing clothes, wear what you want to wear.

^Actually you couldn’t be more wrong…I couldn’t care less about fashion. Fashion is trendy and requires keeping up with “what’s in”. I don’t give a **** about that, I follow the preppy style. It’s timeless and classy.

I made this thread to ignite discussion so I don’t mind you posting that lol

I love preppy guys, I don’t need to see any boxers!
But i think cargoes can look good if they are tailored.

OP- what would be the ideal preppy girl outfit then?

Whether you like it or not, in the world of academia and later in the career world, you will be judged based on what you wear, no matter how fair it is. Though very specific, I think golfer is generally correct in what kind of clothing is “classic” and garners respect from teachers and superiors. I don’t think that “preppy”, however, is the only defnition of “classic”. When a lot of people think “preppy” nowadays, they think Abercrombie: popped collar, carefully ripped and destroyed jeans etc. Even if you’re wearing khaki, but they’re super short-shorts, you don’t exactly qualify as “classic”. There are also certain colors associated with the preppy look, such as pink and green for females. I think that you can stay away from these colors and still be considered “classic”. There’s also a time and place for everything. What you wear to class is different from what you’d wear to the beach, as is what you’d wear to a nice restaraunt compared to what you’d wear hanging out at a friend’s. I’d say that when you’re in an environment that calls for some level of professionalism and respect, that you should make sure what you wear is appropriate. I’d stay away from washed out jeans, jeans with holes, patterns that don’t match, flip flops, too much jewelry, too much skin, and crazy hair. When you’re with your friends and in a casual environment that’s when you can express yourself however you want through your clothing.
