How preppy is this school, exactly, compared to maybe a state school? I know a few people who have visited, and all of their main comments were “it was alright, but too preppy for me.”

For me, there’s two definitions of preppy:

Very rich, Ralph and Lauren, expensive shoes, etc.

Wears American Eagle, Abercrombie, is obnoxious, still thinks it’s rebellious to drink on the weekends, very obsessed with partying

I can tolerate the first type, as long as they’re not showy or snooty about it. The second, however, I can NOT stand. My high school is 98% filled with people like that, and I can’t wait to get out for just that reason.

umm....from what i hear it can be a combination of both. However, it also depends on how you make of your life at GW, the friends who meet, and possibly the dorm house you stay at. I know many people like you who try to esacpe the preppy-ness of thier high school and found GW to be the fit. And i do know others (a very small percentage) who found the school to be the complete opposite and really preppy. well GW is a big school and with so many other universities around the area im sure it will be easy to aviod that and meet people of your interests.

the school is the second most expensive in the country- what do you think?-----although i do think that since gwu is in dc that the campus/ attitutdes are more international/ aware of things beyond drinking and style, than other schools of similar rank, cost are

I might as well admit that I fit your first catergory of preppiness. As such, most of the people I hang out with do too. But I've found that we dont constitute an overwhelming majority here.
There are a bunch of kids out there who are rocking the abercrombie and the ugg boots, but you're going to find them anywhere. I've visited almost all of my high school friend's schools and found about the same percentage.
Someone mentioned that you can sort out these kids by where they live, and I suppose that is partly true. If you stereotype 'Type 2 Preppy' as the kids who like to party, you'll find them applying to live in Thurston. I wont deny that I feel an overwhelming majority of gucci sunglasses and prada bags seem to emerge from that building. However, you're clearly going to find exceptions to any stereotype. I wouldnt worry too much about it.
The one thing I will say though, is that GW isn't much of a pyjama school. If you wear your pyjamas to class, you're probably going to be the only one doing it.
But aside from that I've found that the campus is diverse enough that I havent really had a problem with preppiness. Granted, we all joke with each other about how jappy the place is, but it isn't really hostile joking, it's more like making fun of our own reputation.
Consider doing an overnight here to make sure the student body is up to your standards. However, I should warn you, that my overnight visit didnt go well - I stayed with a very antisocial girl I guess, and we never left her dorm - so I didn't really get a feel for campus. However, I'm sure any past graduates from your high school would be glad to host you...most everyone enjoys hosting prospies.

I'm not really preppy and I've made loads of friends here that are similar to me. I came from a preppy school and definately don't get the sense of it here. I agree with hono118 though in saying that Thurston seems to be more preppy than other dorms. Hope this helps.

ok people...i just visited my friend at GW for the weekend and its not as much preppy as much as its a rich jewish bubble. overall, the student body is good looking and well clad (think juicy couture, seven jeans, gucci bags, so low sweats for the gym, ugg boots, birkenstocks, lacoste t's, north face fleeces galore, etc) the girls like to chill out in expensive sweats and show their pride with GW t's...but when evening arrives they get decked out in designer jeans, bags, tops, and jewlery (true religion jeans, balenciaga bags, etc) and head to georgetown for an evening of vodka tonics and watermelon cosmos. GW is strict with the alcohol policy, so most students pregame in the dorms if theyre not going out for the evening...and then head to an off-campus party where they'll chill with other GW students and the occasional georgetowner or american. guys tend to congregate in groups at these parties, typically around the keg and theyre your average good looking guys. no guido's or ghetto guys here. just rich, sometimes jewish, well dressed guys. think j.crew for the real preppy ones, diesel for the hip ones, lacoste/ae/af for the laid back ones. overall the student body is welcoming, accepting and friendly if your remotely similar in style to them. if not they can be kind of cold. but overall theyre a cool crowd if you can keep up with them. with the acception of a few, they work hard and play hard.

lol, i was wondering what she ment when she said seven and true religion in my humps. wow, lol. shows how much i will fit in at gwu since i don't know anything about name brand clothes.

i'm not extremely preppy either... most people think the GW population is preppy just because it's a 'wealthy' school, but maybe it's not as preppy as people portray it as? hopefully...

yeah that's right i think its for kids with learning problems or something---they serve some sort of special need---i think that's why it so expensive----so technically GW is the most expensive traditional college

Just to mention, you're going to be part of next years students, if you're not preppy your class won't be as preppy. GW does give out a lot of aid so not everyone is super well off. I don't know much about brands either and I'm fine so don't worry. The other thing to mention is that what you see isn't necessarily all the school and one is also more likely to notice very preppy people and not notice everyone else as much. Seriously, just reckon you'll fit in and the most important thing is to get out and about as much as possible when you come and make friends who are similar to you.

last time I checked gtown was a jesuit school (commonly listed as one of the top "christian colleges") and they are one of the only schools that request a "photo". now I'm sure its not as bad as back in the day when the top schools created the SAT to keep jews out of school (note: direct quote from a member of the college board) or something like Harvard's J1/J2/J3 policy, but the student body at gtown would most def not be even comparably as jewish as george washington-im sure the "discrimination" is not nearly as bad as it used to be, but the top jesuit schools definetly still maintain their "christian identity"-for example , my hs is located about 10 min from Boston College, where it is notoriously difficult for Bhs (my school) students to get in. while the university claims that this is because of a desire to create a "geographically diverse" student body, its ironic that BHS has a very large jewish population (esp at the top end of the student body). coincidence?... I don't think so

I'd like to see that quote. Generally the consensus is that years ago, when jews were dominating entering classes at Harvard and Yale etc... it was because of their academic performance. It was then these universities started looking at other parts of the application - personality, appearance, and extracurriculars to lessen their jewish admits. The New Yorker had an interesting article about this very subject of anti-semitism in admissions a few months ago. I'll link to it below.

yea I've read it before... yea, top colleges have done just about everything to keep the jews out of school, standardized tests one among many (they were made on the premise that jews were only hardworking overachievers who would not do well on intelligence tests) the quote is an "off the record" quote from my headmaster, who happens to be the only high school principal (the last time I checked) on the collegeboard- I had asked if if he thought there was any racial discrimination embedded within the test and the quote was his response

i can't believe these posts they're such a load of crap---hogwash--i went to a g-town program summer and trust me there was a very fair representation of jews---this whole conspiracy thing that g-town is dicrcrimintaing on a religious basis is RETARDED----ever heard of the judeo-christian tradition-that's been thriving for the past 60 years here---every heard of the Israel-US FP flop---Jesus!---no where in the us are jews discriminated against so systematically as that of what dipset mentioned-----
all i have to say is that jews typically are geographically located in the northeast---here is where the whole college game in the us is the most competitive------so you guys are with everyone from new york for example---and really i do feel sry for you beacuse you face a lot more competition in sheer numbers than a southerner for example would, and dipset or whoever i'm sry you didn't make the cut----but you don't have to let the process embitter you to the point you would make some of the accusations you just did--------as far as discrimination agianst anyone in the ivies however many years ago the sat was created , i could see that as being very real

first off, I didn't apply to gtown- so in no way am I bitter. its funny how you immediately get defensive about the north-south competitive discrepancy-in no way did I mention that at all. if you read carefully, you would notice that I was responding to your comment about gtown being part of a "jewish bubble". while im sure that in this day and age that there is rep from all diff groups at a competitive school like gtown, youve gotta be out of your mind to declare any jesuit school a "jewish bubble". to even put the jewish pop at gtown in the same sentence as gw is ridiculous. i dont have any idea about what you are talking about w/ "accusations"... I didn't apply to BC either, i was just using it as an example (and trust me- you'd be shocked at the kids from my school getting rejected at BC, which only became a good school cuz of Dougie Flutie). im not some jewish crusader crying over injustice in admissions (im not even a real jew-my mom is a protestant from kentucky lol)- I am only rejecting the idea that Georgetown is a jewish bubble
