I’m a sophomore in high school and I was researching ways to study for the SAT. I came across the website for PrepScholar and found their SAT prep course is $397. Can anyone who has taken their course recommend if it is effective or just a waste of time and money?
My son used Prepscholar for ACT and improved his score. My daughter is now using Prepscholar for the SAT. Both kids liked the format. Daughter says the explanations are better on PS than on Khan Academy (which is free BTW). I paid for PS in the fall so that daughter has up to an entire year to study with it. We are planning 2-3 SAT tests. She is a Junior. I would recommend but try the free week for yourself.
Recommend it. Two of our children have used it so far. One improved her ACT 2 points and was admitted to a Top 30 university. Our son received a 36 on all four sections of the ACT in one sitting. He has been admitted to some top universities as well. Agree with DragonFly…our kids indicated the explanations were better on PS, although they also did use Khan a little. The benefit to PS was they could do it on their own schedule and for as long as they wanted at each session. They could stop and pick it up where they left off. They could use it anywhere they had internet access and were focused.
It all comes down to using a good source, whatever you choose, coupled with a student who is diligent and dedicated to preparing properly.
Best of Luck.
I honestly don’t recommend PrepScholar at all which I will explain for some reasons. In my personal experience I used prepscholar as well as khan academy in order to study for the SAT. took the SAT without essay in 10th grade in November 2016 because it was required for an early college/high school program that I was going for. I scored 1470 (710 Verbal, 760 Math). I “actually” took it on November 2017 and scored a disappointing 1460 (700 Verbal, 760 Math) considering a whole year went by and I only dropped 10 points but I managed a 22/24 on the essay. I studied intensely for the March 2018 and scored a 1580 (790 Verbal, 790 Math) but didn’t put as much effort into the essay and scored a mere 15/24 on the essay. Leading up to the november 2017 SAT I used more prep scholar and a little khan academy but it turns out that ended up hurting my scores. After that disappointing score I used only khan academy for the next couple of months in addition to a test prep center i went to and my score jumped from 1460 to 1580. Not only does prep scholar cost a lot of money while khan academy is free but prep scholar also recycles questions and passages a lot because they don’t have too many of each. In addition, khan academy is partnered with college board so you’re getting some validity in terms of question accuracy. Overall, in my experience and my preference is to not go with prep scholar.
Hi DallasBrownBoy, Would you say that your 120 pt increase from 1460 to 1580 was the result of the test prep center you went to? Or was it just Khan Academy? Or any other new resource you used? Considering PrepScholar but unsure. Now that you have 1580, what prep method/resources would you recommend to get to that point? Thanks! And best of luck!
@DallasBrownBoy, can you share what other resources you used. Any Erica Metlzer or PWN the SAT. Was your test prep center KD?
