Prerequisite v. Lower Division Reqs

I am going over the Cal Academic Orienteering stuff before my CalSo this Monday-Tuesday, and as I'm checking out majors, I am running into "Prerequisites" for a major and "Lower Division Reqs" for a major.

What is the difference between the two?

Thanks a bunch.

prereqs are courses that you have to take before you can declare the major.
lower division reqs are just that...lower division reqs of the major. you don't need to take them before you declare. you just need to take those before you graduate.

So, we have to take lower division reqs ANYTIME before we graduate, or in the first 2 years?

Anytime, but usually you should take them during the first two years so you can meet other students at your own age, instead of being the few/lone senior(s), and because they are usually prereqs for upper division courses.

Plus it helps to build a foundation of knowledge, which might come in handy.

Ok. So how come in the Mass Comm. major there is one asteriks, aka ONE PREREQUISITE (Mass Comm 10), but there is a NOTE that says: Students must take at least 3 of these courses to apply for the major. All the other classes listed are not prerequisites, just lower division reqs. Is this because mass comm 10 can't be taken until soph year and so they expect you to have taken 2 of the lower div. requirements frosh year or beginning of soph?
