Prerequisites: After or before applying?

Concerning satisfying Prerequisites for medical school (and possibly pharm school too), do schools usually require you to complete the prerequisite classes before or after application period? I ask this because I noted that some specific schools do allow prerequisite classes to be completed as long as it is before "matriculation". Does that mean before admission to school is sent our or before you start attending the school? If it is simply before attending the school, how often is this case?

I ask this because there are certain subjects I am not that great in, so it would be in my best interest to wait until after I applied to schools to finishes those classes. Would that be possible for most medical schools?

Many medical school prerequisites are also prerequisites for the MCAT. You cannot apply to med school without having taken the MCAT, and so you need to take those classes prior to applying. This definitely applies (or at least did apply, since I don’t know the requirements for the new MCAT coming out soon) to general chemistry, organic chemistry, and at least the first level of physics.

If it’s a class that isn’t required for the MCAT but is required for medical school, you can take it between applying and matriculating.

If you are missing key pre-reqs (Ochem, physics) on your transcript when you apply medical schools simply won’t consider you, even if you have a MCAT score.

OTOH, school-specific pre-reqs (like genetics or anatomy) can be listed as anticipated or in progess when you apply and it won’t be an issue.

All med school acceptances are conditional and you won’t be offered a final admission until you submit a final trasncript showing that you’ve graduated and have satisfied all entrance requirements. This means that if you don’t earn a satisfactory grade (typically a B or better) in the pre-req that your acceptance can be revoked.

My son, who is a junior getting ready to apply during this cycle, hasn’t completed both his required bio labs yet. He is scheduled to finish one this summer and the other in the fall of his senior year. He is a double major with one major in school of engineering and the other in SAS. Scheduling has been a nightmare for him with preference given to juniors and seniors. When he raised this concern with his pre-health office, they told him not to worry about it. They told him that he would be fine as long as he finishes the labs before graduation.

^^Labs are not a deal breaker. D1 has scheduling issues at her college. All chem labs were (and still are) severely impacted. Preference is given to graduating seniors. She took her second semester OChem lab during the spring immediately before she started med school. As long as it was completed (and passed) before she matriculated, that’s all the adcomm cared about.

But a lab is significantly different than a class.

They have to be completed before to be completed before “matriculation”. Before or after application is not important.
This is for future college students, too late for the current. If scheduling is a concern, keep in mind that being in Honors usually has a great bnenfit of priority scheduling right from the beginning, do not have to wait until Junior / Senior. D. did not have double major, but she had 2 minors and one of her pre-med friends had triple major. They have graduated in 4 years. In fact, D. did not take a single summer class. Priority registration has been a blessing.
