I am also a Political Science major and have been accepted to UCLA. On the ASSIST.ORG website, it says “At minimum, you should complete three preparatory courses by the spring term prior to transfer.”

As I have said in another thread, my friend had to drive to another nearby community college (De Anza) to take POLI 5 because it was not offered at our school (Foothill), in order to meet the 3 course prereq requirement.

What single poli class did you take? Your college only offers one poli cass? Not even statistics?

I took POLSCI 1 at my community college, which is equivalent to POL SCI 40 at UCLA. As for statistics, I took a statistics course; however, it was not equivalent to STATS 10.

i guess the minimum 3 out of 5 prereq requirement is pretty much set in stone because it’s such an impacted major and they don’t take into account the schools that don’t offer enough of them. or they do but just expect the students there to find alternative ways to take the classes

Yeah, the person above me is what my TAP honors counselor told me. I checked EVC’s sister school San Jose City College’s available poli sci courses. They have 4 poli courses. I’m sure if you had a good counselor like mine, he or she would have told you to take the trip there and take the mandated courses.

Thank you all very much for the replies. I actually e-mailed a person from the Political Science Undergraduate Advising Office from Berkeley a year ago, and that person told me that she does not believe it would influence their opinion if the prerequisites were not offered at my college. She also stated that there were people that were accepted without taking three courses for Political Science at Berkeley.

sounds like getting pre-reqs done is a must. i have been going to 3 different cc’s in order to get the classes i need and transfer within 2 years of start

Based on my experiences, it appears that completing your prerequisites would be highly recommended. Unfortunately, I realized this after my reject from UCLA. I decided to try and enroll myself with colleges that are not near me, simply because my current community college does not offer it. I am not sure whether I would have to live in a different city.

Does this mean any applicant who does not finish the pre-reqs for their major is an auto-reject? I applied as a UC inter-campus transfer for media studies at Berkeley, except I have not completed 2/4 pre-reqs for the major. I put on my app though, that I will be finishing the pre-reqs this summer.

After reading this thread, I feel very discouraged

@external - I agree, you’re definitely a strong applicant and you should appeal. If an officer told you on the phone that it should not affect their decision, then you should challenge their decision!

@external: evergreen valley college is not too far from others, like de anza and san jose city. I went to evergreen and san jose city in the same semester to fulfill prereq’s, and now i got to de anza to finish them off. maybe they know that you had these options?

At that time, I was told not to worry about attending other schools, considering the courses I was taking at Evergreen Valley College. Over the summer, I am going to try and take the prerequisites at San Jose City College and De Anza College. I hope there will still be available seats left.

Just want to tell you guys that if you got rejected because you didn’t take pre reqs that weren’t offered, definitely appeal. I couldn’t take four of mine (poli sci) and after seeing how many people got turned down because of it I was sure I would get rejected. I was told the same thing by my CC’s councilors and UCLA’s admissions people when I called in November, so I was pretty angry when I saw how many people got turned down because of it. I did get in though, so clearly they are willing to make exceptions.

So yeah, appeal for sure, even if you don’t think the odds are very good or if you don’t have any terribly “new” information. Good luck to all of you.

I had asked my cousin to visit the website because she does work in Admissions and I hope she answered some of your questions! I just read another thread where someone got into PolSci major without completing 4 of the prereqs and I’m just lost! So like my cousin said, don’t start worrying until next Friday! I really hope you get into Cal!(:

Even if you do it with your application as they have it, take those prereq courses! Who knows, they might even offer you Spring admission. They typically do that when you’re missing a couple prereqs and can take Fall to finish them and then go to Cal! So be positive! If you end up crashing a course, let the professor know you need that class to get into Cal! I’m sure they would make an exception in your case!

We’re almost there! Next week this day, gosh I’m really nervous!

That might have been me in that other thread. I posted in the UCLA Poli Sci admits thread with the same thing. UCLA is my first choice so I won’t be waiting for CAL :D

Thank you very much for asking your cousin to come back to answer some questions for us. She has been extremely helpful and I am incredibly grateful to have my questions answered.

I’m superrrrrrr glad I was able to help…at least in asking her to come online! Even though she is super swamped with work, I think the way she sees is coming back on CC to help answer questions; probably some she wanted an answer to too when she was here!

Heh, I just posted in the other pre req thread, but I only completed one out of five. They are requiring that I complete two this summer, but as I said, I’ll take that deal.
