Presbyterian College

Does anyone know anthing about Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina?

Presbyterian was on my D's list for a while - we have driven past it a number of times and the campus has hosted a summer Presbyterian youth program. The location is very nice - in an area between Charlotte and Columbia. It has about 1200 students and is liberal-arts, and was in her range size-wise, but the price tag was a bit high (I think it is $35K plus now) compared to other church-related schools that were closer. I think there is little in merit aid for out-of staters, unless you are Presbyterian and are going for the denomination-wide scholarship program. If you are looking for a small liberal arts school in the South, though, it is worth a visit.

Thanks for that, Rachacha. Does anyone know anything about campus life? What's the school spirit like? Are the dorms good? What is the town of Clinton like? Any info is appreciated.

I have never heard that Presbyterian only offers scholarships to fellow Presbyterians. That is nonsense. They are a fine little school in South Carolina, largely very conservative. Not as prestigious as Wofford or Furman or Emory, but for those desiring a small campus with great faculty and good academics, growing sports presence, its a great choice. Kids who go there just didnt want the big state school like USC-Columbia, College of Charleston, or Clemson...or neighboring UGa, UNC, NCState, GaTech etc.

Its a very pretty campus and the students are very tight nit. I strongly recommend a campus visit WHILE the students are in session.

Sorry if I confused anyone - the Presbyterian church has a scholarship program that is for students going to any PCUSA affiliated church, of which Presbyterian is one, it is not a program for the specific school.

As to the OP's request about campus life - we have only been there during the summer, so I wouldn't be able to offer anything there...

I have two cousins who graduated from there. Both are very religious, but nice people. One is a school principal now. The other is a stay-at-home mom.

Both S and D looked at PC and S was a talking with tennis coach there. School just moved to D1 status so athletics should become more exciting. Seafooldlover is correct that the prestige of Wofford or Furman may not be there, but it is a great little school.

I got the impression there was a fair amount of merit money for SAT scores > 1200 and/or students with strong track records of community service.

My daughter currently attends PC. We are out of state and PC has been very generous with grant and scholarship money. In fact, PC ended up costing about as much as an in-state school.

As far as the town of Clinton… it is quite small. However, just a few minutes down the road is the town of Laurens, and Greenville is only 35 minutes away.

The dorms were the biggest challenge for us when daughter was looking for info on PC. So, let me spend a few minutes on this topic. There are several choices for dorms. They have the newer dorms in Belk Hall that have 2 rooms with 2 girls in each room and a bathroom in between for the 4 girls to share. These rooms are very small, but the girls seem to love this option. There is also the community bathroom dorms. In these rooms there are two girls sharing a room with a hall style bathroom. Smyth is a beautiful dorm with the community style bathroom. The rooms are large, the heat/air are adequate, ample bathroom space (although a vanity area would help tremendously), free washer/dryer, doors are locked at all times.

The kids at this school love the campus, the staff, and the professors. There is a large Greek life presence, but plenty of options if you are not into that. The food is not very good which is the biggest complaint. {The contract is up this summer so hopefully they will look into changing contracts.} There are on campus jobs if you are interested in making some extra money. If you choose PC I don’t think you will regret it. Go visit the campus, talk to the students, sit in on a class, ask to see some dorm rooms (you might actually have to ask a few students if they’d mind showing you there room if you want to see something in particular as the only room we saw on tour was in Belk.) Good luck on making your next big move in life.
