There was a great thread last year that was used to document when families were hearing back from their prescreen submissions. I keep referring back to it so I thought I would start one for this year. My D has heard back positively from CCM, where she applied for the 1/23 vocal audition date. We got that email a few days ago. Also I believe Oberlin EA auditioners should hear results today or tomorrow.

great idea POTO mom! Good luck with the Oberlin decision!

My son passed the prescreen and will be auditioning at The New School (guitar jazz). We were surprised that they informed people even before applications are due. I wish other schools would!

And yes, good luck to POTOmom and D!

That’s great Jazz/shreddermom! The New School audition was actually my son’s favorite last year.

SJTH, I can’t remember what instrument your son plays (drumset or guitar, I’m thinking), but I was just thinking how the known advantage of being male in almost every other aspect of college admissions is completely reversed when it comes to guitarists and drummers. I bet a girl would be highly desirable on either instrument.

Drums, and definitely. Jazz in general is pretty male-dominated.

S was just invited to audition at NYU Steinhardt guitar jazz!

I actually just got an e-mail from Eastman about my audition time but it mentioned nothing about my prescreeing so I e-mailed them back asking if it was an acceptance to the live audition. Anyone in the same boat?

Congrats! Jazz/shreddermom. Nice Christmas present. No, we have not gotten anything from Eastman, nor have we gotten any info from Oberlin. UGH. However, we did get an email from Barry Alexiander Vocal Competition. My D got first place and will be performing at Carnegie Hall in January. She is stunned into tears at the moment. Me, too, I think.

That’s amazing, POTO Mom. She must be fab (how LA do I sound?), and I’m sure good news is coming soon from Oberlin!

Congrats Potomom. Your D is having a terrific year!!! Fantastic!!!

My son (voice - tenor) received an e-mail audition invitation from Indiana today, an e-mail from Michigan yesterday and a letter from Colorado today.

We are both “rookies” at this process. There are many things we don’t know. Is this an appropriate place to ask questions (this is my first post to college confidential!)? For example, I assume that, as a general rule, when there is pre-screen involved that a lower percentage of applicants are invited(?) By way of illustration, he’s also been invited to Michigan – but we did not have to submit a CD or DVD. Wouldn’t the lack of a pre-screen music sample indicate that Michigan will tend to cast a wider net relative to Indiana? If not, on what basis do they make audition invitation decisions? Or maybe they all cast a fairly wide net?? As you can tell, I’m trying to guage what an audition invitation “means”.

Thanks in advance for any answers and/or for pointing me in right direction for getting these kinds of answers.

TenorDad, others will know better than I, but I think all we can say is that prescreens indicate SOME sort of narrowing down. However, depending on instrument/voice/program,etc. there are still many, many students competing for relatively few spots. I would also bet that some schools only eliminate the obviously unprepared candidates, while others are more selective when choosing who passes prescreens.

Other than a few LAC’S with non-audition-based music programs, my S only applied to one music school where everyone is invited to audition. We just went (early action), and it was quite the “cattle call”. I think he would’ve preferred knowing the group was previously narrowed down.

We had one non-prescreen audition acceptance last year at Northwestern and I think the only screen for music audition was academic fit. Michigan is a pretty selective school so depending on how complete the application was at this point, the audition invitation might indicate belief that your Son academically qualifies.

Congrats on the latest Potomom…my DD was very excited for your DD on the previous accomplishment…she gets home tonight…I’ll let her know about this one too.(that is if they haven’t already talked)

I’m new to this also. Should we expect to be notified either way on pre-screenings? That is will they tell us if my D didn’t get an audition?

Heard back from Eastman. They said they don’t look at the prescreens if there’s enough room at the regional auditions. Now just waiting for Indiana and Northwestern. As for Michigan and Oberlin, their e-mails said I was “invited” to audition after reading my application. I’m guessing this just means I’m playing repertoire for the audition that is of an acceptable level. Good luck!

At least for guitar (so I would guess, other instruments as well), Oberlin doesn’t prescreen for regional auditions either.

POTO Mom - Wow - What a year! You must be pinching yourself!!

laladreams,

Yes - you should be notified either way on pre-screens. You’ll hear either that 1) the school has reviewed the pre-screen submission and is unable to offer the student an audition spot or 2) an invitation to audition with date and time.

If you don’t hear anything by mid-January (absent any other information on the websites about timing of reviews), it’s probably worth checking that the pre-screen was received.

Good luck!!
