Spanishmezzo - if Eastman has denied your prescreening CD that may not bode well for IU and Houston since that is your final audition. I would seriously look into auditioning at some non prescreened programs (yes there are a number of good ones) I would start your apps for them pronto and send the universities an email asking for an extension. I know a lot of this sounds last second but banking on Rice is not wise considering they often accept fewer vocalists than you can count on one hand.

Your other option would be to just change your plans and get a live audition at IU and Houston. It vastly decreases your chances to audition through a CD. Whatever they told you, it really does. Not trying to be a downer, just trying to help.

I hope everything works out for you. PM me if you have any further questions.

operaluvr - Iām not counting on IU, I know that my prescreening wasnāt golden, but there wansnāt another option for me. I was going to live audition, but earlier in the admissions process I had a conflict with all of the audition weekends and couldnāt attend, so I had to request that they just consider my prescreen for final. Iām making a different recording for Houston, and Iām sure that one will be better. I am applying to Belmont Univ. in Nashville and, although their contemporary music far surpasses their classical music these days, itās still a decent school and one that I can probably get into. Thank you for your input.

lifeofsolitude, I completely agree with operaluvrās advice. It is not uncommon for them to consider a late CD. One school my son had decided not to apply to, but had submitted everything else onlineā¦ when they didnāt receive a prescreen CD, they even emailed him wondering what had happened and offered to extend the deadline. I also know of someone whose CD was sent but never received, and they allowed this student to send another. He was eventually admitted (friend of my sonās) to the school in question.

Spanishmezzo- IU does ad hoc auditions. You can call and ask them when they could fit you in for an audition outside of their scheduled ones. I did the exact same thing and sitll wound up with a huge scholarship from them. It certainly doesnāt hurt to try. I am sure things will work out one way or another :)

Spanishmezzo, not to rag on your schools but Belmont is nowhere near the calibre of the other schools that you are applying to for classicl voice. It does have a good commercial music program, but the classical program is practically nonexistent. Also I have heard some pretty terrible things about the vocal instruction there. I have a friend transferring out of there right now who was completely and utterly disappointed with the training she was receiving (she is about to try her THIRD teacher at the school).

My D (flute) hasnāt heard from Carnegie Mellon either. She is also still waiting to hear from Eastman, Boston University, NEC, and Peabody. She has a few non-prescreened auditions lined up, but would really like a chance at two of these.

I am aware that Belmontās classical music program is not great, but everything else about the college lines up very well for me, so it is kind of a fall-back school. Does anybody know anything about music therapy major? Good schools? Audition requirements? My academics are good (34 ACT, close to a 4.0 GPA), so apart from that, what would I need? Iām just now discovering this major, and Iām quite interested.

Lifeofsolitude: Relax. I suspect that the reason you didnāt send a prescreening recording to Rice is that they donāt require one for violin (at least they did not two years ago and their present website makes no mention of prescreening for violin, whereas, it clearly does indicate that prescreening is required for several other instruments). So there is probably no need for a desperate phone call tomorrow or for spending a fortune on a same-day courier.

Have you submitted your audition profile form online for Rice? You are supposed to receive a link to schedule your audition after you have submitted.

I think that many people assume that Rice would have prescreens for violin since Rice is an extremely difficult admit for violin (much more difficult than most of the schools that actually require prescreens).

It is difficult to keep track of the unique requirements for each of the schools. My advice (which you have heard before, I know): have your well-organized spreadsheet/chart/table with all of the important information about each school very handy and accessible.

Okay, I just filled out the audition request form and I know it didnāt go through last time and I noted that on ācomments and questionsā. Do you think they will still let me audition? I also contacted the director of admissions for Shepherd and he wonāt get back to me until after New Yearsā¦ugh I hope I can make it!

Yes, lifeofsolitude, I think they will still probably let you audition. I seem to recall being somewhat confused about the audition request thing at Rice and submitting later than you have. You are less likely to get the date of your choice if you submit very late, but I know my sonās date request was made after January 1st and he got his requested date. Best of luck!

Thanks! Iāll just be grateful to even get an audition! The violin faculty is superb at Rice. I met Ms. Winkler a couple of months back and she seemed really enthusiastic about music which is what I really love.

I hear nothing but raves about Winklerāmy son has a friend in her studio and has met several others from her studio. My wife met her and I have spoken with herāshe is genuinely interested in her students and a warm person (yes, very high expectations, but with humanity thrown in unlike some of the Russian-style violin pedagogues).

Rejected for VP to CCM and NEC iāve been granted an aud at BoCo automatically bc i attended the summer VCI program and still waiting on word from Carnegie Mellonā¦fingers crossed!!

Both my boyfriend (violin) of 3.5 years and I (clarinet) applied to mastersā programs at Northwestern and received email notification today that weāve been invited to audition!!!

This is a big confidence boost for me because I decided very late that I wanted to apply there - I had to learn all the music and make all the recordings in about a month, and completely on my own steam because my clarinet professor was away on a tour. Hooray!!!
