Does anyone know the average number of videos Otterbein receives and of that how many are sent through to the live audition?

I swear I read Otterbein has around 65 per live audition but I can’t find that information anymore so I’m not sure if I’ve confused the numbers.

I think I saw that somewhere on this forum, but when I read it I thought that it was being confused with Elon where that’s definitely the case this year.

I can only account for the numbers on the my son attended, but at the first on-campus audition last year (December 8th), there were only 16 applicants. I expect the groups were bigger at Unifieds and later on-campus auditions.

Dr Stefano said yesterday that they received over 250 (?) pre screens last year and saw 160 in-person auditions. Of those, 120 were girls. My pre screen number might be off, but I’m pretty sure that’s what he said about the other.

The prescreen number sounds a little low, doesn’t it? However, they also let people do “live prescreens” at Moonifieds and maybe a conference or two (like Thespians)–not sure–and as walk-ins at some of the Unifieds, at least I’ve heard that.

I have to say, the small group in the on-campus audition was a real bonus. The kids all watch each other do their songs and monologues, there was a strong feeling of collegiality between the kids auditioning and the current students who were there to help and observe, and it was a confidence boost to know you had passed the prescreen and were there because you had a shot at this. My son felt like he really was seen and heard by the auditors.

Good luck, MTMC! The prescreen was pretty straightforward last year. However, we thought it had been uploaded completely and didn’t discover till a month later that one part had not gone through…re-submitted it and all was well. Watch for a confirmation message that everything is done! :)

Someone mentioned this weekend (not sure who) that all 4 of the MT boys in either the sophomore or freshman class, came from the December on-campus auditions. Interesting.

As for the 250+ number, he did also mention that prior to the pre-screen process, they would do around 300 on campus auditions. Might not be that far off…

Good luck MTMajorCook. Let us know how that all goes (as I’m sure you will). My S is a junior, so we have a year yet.

I have known a student that prescreen’d at the Thespian festival - Otterbein wasn’t even on his radar until then. He recently graduated and interned out in LA his last semester and moved back out there after he graduated. The other auditioned at Unifieds and ended up in Vocal Performance and loves it

MTmom2015, It was great to meet up with you and your son this weekend! I’m happy you had the chance to fit so much into your schedule - it really does make a difference as you explore all of the different programs and schools.

It’s true that all of the MT boys for the '16 class came from the December auditions. Also, regarding numbers on prescreens and overall auditions, I believe (and I think kksmom5 might have eluded to this elsewhere) for the smaller programs the number of students choosing to submit for substantially smaller programs decreases because the odds seem so much tougher in the long run. This is why I think it’s so important to explore every program thoroughly. This weekend’s Les Mis is a great example of the Otterbein ‘brand’ of talent, if you will. Certainly circumstances vary from one production to another, but this cast included BFA MT’s, BFA Acting, BA theatre students, BA non theatre majors w/ dance curriculum, etc. In other words, all of these students often share classes and practical experience together. If a student applies for MT, but finds they are being considered for Acting only or Vocal Performance, I strongly encourage them to consider those options.

Finally, if you submit the prescreen, stay on top of your email to find confirmation that it was received. Our son was one of those auditioning a couple years ago in December, and his prescreen wasn’t confirmed as received until a couple weeks prior. We could see that it had been viewed many times over a few weeks, and finally called the department as to his status. Turns out there was a communication glitch and he had been invited to audition in person. There’s a lot going on at the schools and no process runs perfectly.

Thanks for the tips on the prescreens and well wishes! He will have a dance submission as well, he’s submitting for consideration for B.F.A. MT with a concentration in dance. I’ll be sure to check all the components are received.

I contacted the department . . . they typically have about 400 prescreen submissions. This includes on-campus, Thespian events and other non-Unifieds events.

Same thing happened to my girl as to abparent’s son . . . my D never received the email stating she passed the prescreen. I happened to call about another issue and the person I spoke to said something like, “. . . when your daughter auditions for Otterbein at Unifieds . . .” and that led to finding out about her passing the pre-screen. I do think it was the first year that Otterbein went to Gmail as their host and they had some issues. But, as apparent said, if the prescreen video has had several views and a couple comments on the Acceptd site, and a lot of time has passed, it wouldn’t hurt to follow-up with the department.

Prescreen in last night. I sent PM to abparent but I noticed a few of you mentioned it. I can’t figure out how to see if the video is views or not. I’m sure its way to soon so maybe over the next few days they will be more obvious.

Glad your S got his prescreens done! Seems like you have most everything done now except the auditions. D submitted her Otterbein prescreen because it was the only prescreen she didn’t need to finish all of those pesky supplements or submit her application first. Sigh…break a leg to all who have their prescreens in!

cellomom - he is pretty on top of it application wise…but in reality this is the only prescreen going in for a few weeks. He still has 4 others to submit. He changed his ballad! Otterbein didn’t require you perform the same material should you make it to the live auditions so he figured he would submit what he had so far. No worries! It will all come together. I really pushed him to get through this. I know my S…he fills every moment of his free time up with something so when I saw an idle moment I reminded him what he needed to do. I think he’s this far to shut me up LOL!

I have to say his dance instructor did a great job coaching him through his dance techniques. I feel like I rarely get to see him tap dance and that’s my favorite!

Wondering if people have found out their audition dates. My son passed his pre-screen and sent an e-mail on Nov. 22nd asking for a date for the Chicago Unifieds . I figured not to worry about the lack of confirmation because of the Thanksgiving break, but now I’m back in the usual fretting mode. This is one of two auditions he does not have a confirmed date/time for and I’d really like to wrap things up.
