UR President Joel Seligman resigned his position yesterday.
The NY Times coverage on Friday had this a bit different. When I read the news report, it seemed to indicate that his resignation announcement was prior to the release of the report and that he confirmed it was his decision to step down for a new start for the university. He had not been asked to do so by the Board. Big loss in my opinion. His first year coincided with my daughter’s freshman year and seemed to be everywhere… Hillel services for Rosh Hashonah, in person at Todd theater performances, very available to meet and greet at Meliora Weekend. She said that alums were kept well informed in frequent communication from the U of R. I still receive Parent News announcements but on AOL and I don’t check that account all too often but I did check over the weekend and I hadn’t received anything yet.
Seligman hasn’t had the best of health. A few years ago he took leave to undergo cancer treatment. It may have been time to go.
Interesting to learn that his health might have been involved. I think it is a loss for UR though his temporary replacement, Richard Feldman, is also very passionate about the school.
When my son started, Richard Feldman gave one of the opening speeches. He had started at UR as a chemistry major and he attributed his ability to transition to be a Philosophy major was because of the environment of the school. He has worked there for 40 years so UR is in good hands.
Yes I agree that Richard Feldman is an outstanding choice. Very personable. I remember speaking with him at some event and I told him that older d was graduating from Brandeis and he sort of chuckled and said that the schools were somewhat interchangeable. Older d had also been accepted at Rochester but Brandeis a better fit for her.
@bookmama22, it’s funny to hear you say that about Brandeis and Rochester. My S just got into Brandeis ED2, but if he hadn’t then Rochester was the one I was secretly hoping for!
It looks like the presidential turnover didn’t change the administrative culture, the offending professor is still there, and the problems continue.
