It would be different if there was a higher GPA requirement. However, I don’t feel comfortable having the bar set at 2.5. At least set it at 3.0. And just in general, what will this do to the standards for jobs in the future? It’s already hard enough getting a job with a 4 yr degree. The worth of a bachelors degree will go down because so many people will already have a 2 year degree.
CC’s are not exactly empty now. This is a solution to a non-existent problem.
Coming from a current CC student, If you really want free tuition you can work for it. There are many scholarships at my CC offered to people who have demonstrated hard work and dedication that are almost if not equal to free tuition. With that being said, there are also many unmotivated people at my CC who just don’t want to be there and it shows on their transcripts. Why not take that $34 billion and apply it elsewhere…
On a separate issue. You don’t justify bad ideas/decisions by pointing out other bad ideas/decisions.
I am waiting for free houses, free vacations, free utilities and all free food.
Then we are all set! :))
Some people (dual credit students) are already getting their tuition paid for.
I don’t know how the government is supposed to pay for this, really, unless they raise taxes even higher and borrow even more from China. Neither of those are good options. It’s just another government handout.
Well, thankfully it’s just a proposal. It will get blocked. It costs way too much and I’m waiting to see where this $34,000,000,000 is coming from.
@CaliCash
It would come from pockets of the the 49% that pay taxes and from China, I bet.
I’m the 49% that pays taxes, and I’d like to see more investment in the future of MOTIVATED students.
K-12 is already free, but still not all students avail themselves of the opportunity. Likewise, i see not all students availing themselves of free CC, only the motivated ones.
Good for you, @GMTplus7, if you want to help the education of motivated students. But are you willing to force everyone to share that bill?
I’m more of a “freedom is not free” person, so I tend not to like people controlling how we spend our personal money.
@albert, i can’t tell u enough how sick-n-tired i am of the current situation where people are able to game the system for FA while i have to pick up the bill. Either make it free or charge everyone the same price.
All this will do is make it free for more students who didn’t get accepted to universities, though. There is no reason to think that most of those would choose a CC instead because it’s free since the motivated ones are also the competitive ones in most cases.
Just because students didn’t do so hot in high school doesn’t mean they’ll do poorly in community college. I know many who get motivated after being out of the forced environment, and even going to cc shows initiative.
They could do a min. GPA or number of credit hrs or how many years the schooling is free, to ensure that a few weak investments don’t suck the system
I’m curious to see what the value of an Associate’s Degree will amount to.
