I’m not sure if this was a Greek comedy or tragedy but the chorus was awesome!

If the Governor brings back Dragas for another term then I am sure many people will go through the roof (well…maybe not the maintenance guy who sent emails)

I thought there were a number of subtle jabs from both sides. I particularly like TS’s “I make the same commitment to improving the University that I made when I started in 2010”

SO…now is UVA the laughing stock of universities?

To the faculty and staff, alum, students and friends of UVa - Wahoowa!

Not permanently, just this month.

After McDonnell’s threat, weren’t they just voting for themselves?

Well there’s two weeks of your life that you will never get back…

“After McDonnell’s threat, weren’t they just voting for themselves?”

I think so!

“Well there’s two weeks of your life that you will never get back…”

yes…and how much did all that cost?

The first university in my memory to render politicians on a board impotent. Those who see comedy look uneducated.

"“Well there’s two weeks of your life that you will never get back…”

I wonder if TS gets to add an addendum to her “new” contract, some kind of retribution for undue pain and suffering? At the least, HD should spring for a day for her at a luxurious CVille Spa! :)

Thank you to everyone in the UVA community who stood up for President Sullivan. Today will surely be remembered as a great day in UVA history. And for those of you who think they were two wasted weeks, they weren’t; new bonds were formed and the community was invigorated. I hope to see the momentum of the last two weeks continue forward to build an even stronger University.

Or maybe the people who don’t see the comedy just don’t have a sense of humor.

And the Board of Visitors has been rendered impotent. I can’t imagine smart people will want to be on that board in the future. For what? To get publicly villified for doing a job that gives no compensation?

This really makes UVA unattractive as a place to send your children to college, doesn’t it?

^ No, it doesn’t.

Actually, Sullivan made a point of saying that prospective students should admire the passion, commitment, and high quality of debate that the university community had shown in the past two weeks, and want to be part of a community like that. And I think she’s right. At the end of the day, all public universities face these kinds of issues, but something really unique and magical happened at UVa. You had a lot of thoughtful debate amid the occasional catcalls, really impressive unity and energy among the students, faculty, administration, and alumni, lots of demonstration about how much people cared about the institution and its values, and ultimately the Board apologizing and reversing itself in public (and THAT’s something you don’t see so often). All pretty exciting. And it compares very favorably with students getting drunk, rioting, and burning cars at Penn State when its Board wouldn’t let Joe Paterno coach one more home game after he was publicly insubordinate.

Truly surreal.

“This really makes UVA unattractive as a place to send your children to college, doesn’t it?”

Over the next 5-8 years, no concern at all. After that, the question is what will UVA look like as compared to its public and private competitiors/peers (who face similar challenges).

Seems to me that UVA’s enrollment size is going to be increasing in the future, maybe by a lot. That seems to be the only way to provide more VA seats while also keeping the OOS dollars flowing. Probably also some online classes to keep down the number of new teachers that have to be hired.

UVA, for now, has plenty of smart in and out of state applicants so admission standards won’t drop too much. Over the long term, I’d fear that size increase might dilute some of UVA’s distinctive appeal (particularly to OOS-ers) and erode its stature. But probably not the end of the world.

Please don’t call for a vote among UVA students and alumni about whether they would trade in Sullivan for a shot at a national championship.
