Presidential Fellows

Hi guys, I was admitted to Miami EA class of 2023 tonight (school of EHS, kinesiology major) I was accepting into academic scholars EHS and honors programs. I was wondering what you thought my chance of being a finalist for the presidential fellows program is, and also if I don’t receive this what you think my merit would be (based on the website, it implies that with my stats I should receive anywhere from half to full tuition). Here are my stats:

GPA: 94/100 UW (my school does not rank and does not do weighted GPAs)
ACT: 34, not superscore (35 english 34 math 34 reading 32 science)
Full IB diploma candidate: for junior and senior year I’ve been taking:

  • IB Mathematics HL
  • IB Biology HL
  • IB English HL
  • IB ESS SL
  • IB Visual Art SL
  • IB French Ab Initio
  • IB TOK
    Gender: Female
    Major/program: Direct admit DPT
    Home state: Illinois

I have done 50 hours of physical therapy observation, have been on pre-professional dance companies for all four years of high school, have a job at a gym and work about 8 hours a week during school year 20 hours a week during the summer, and have done some small things like volunteer tutoring weekly for a semester and participating in summer immersion programs in sports medicine. I come from a small private high school with only about 200 students.

I’ve heard of the Presidential Fellows, but given that it’s new it’s hard to say what anyone’s chances are. You’d have to think that it’s going to be tough, though. Miami is a mid-size school and it’s well known, so the pool of candidates will be strong.

On the face of it, though, your ACT is good, being an IB diploma candidate would also look good, but then not all schools offer IB so I wonder how that would stack up against a kid with a bunch of 4s and 5s on AP exams. (?)

It’s good that you’re working, and while I’m not sure what pre-professional dance companies actually do, I would imagine that it would consume a ton of hours, and would require a lot of hard work. If you’re competing at the national level and doing well, then I think that would look very strong indeed.

Sure hope you get the nod to compete for one! Best of luck to you.
