Hi!! I had recently heard about the award and had a few questions:

Must the 250 hours be completed over a 12 month period? Here's what the website says but I was a bit confused:

Award Criteria
Any individual, family, or group can receive Presidential recognition for volunteer hours earned over a 12-month period or over the course of a lifetime at home or abroad. The following are the eligibility requirements for each age group:

Presidential Volunteer Service Award Criteria

Gold Level.

Kids: 100 hours or more
Young Adults: 250 hours or more
Adults: 500 hours or more
Family & Groups: 1000 hours or more

Will this award play a role in college admissions? If so, how much? I am volunteering at the hospital and will be completing around 200 hours so I was wondering if I should look into completing an additional 50 hours through another service project.

Thanks for your help :)!!!

Dont know anything about this award–and no link provided…

…that said–often these awards require you to register and had some kind of followup to porve you have been doing the hours/working at the charity etc.

…also some awards dont allow charitable work for faith based organizations or for schools that serve one population etc…

So check out all of the details…

Most of all–serve in community because its your passion and part of your heart NOT because the award wil pad a resume.

@ fogfog…I enjoy my community service. I’m just wondering if it is worth it to do those extra hours because there are other ECs that I enjoy more. thanks for taking the time to read my post!

I’m pretty sure the 12-month period is saying that you can count all the hours you’ve done for the latest 12 months. I don’t think it means you have to spread out your hours over 12 months. So if you completed 250 hours in say, four months, you would qualify for this too.

I did something like this last year, and really, it won’t “play a role” or help you in admissions because the fact that you’ve completed 250 hours is already stated on your app.

But hey, if it makes you feel special, why not?

^ But if it were over 16 months, would it count? Because it says a “lifetime”

The hours will count. The award is just recognition for your hours and I doubt they’ll go “WOW, 250 hrs AND a certificate to confirm it??!?!”. It’s what you volunteer in and how long that matter. Getting recognition for the impact of your efforts, such as city recognition, would be good to mention. A certificate that simply acknowledges that you put in the hours won’t be a big deal.

Okay thank you!!! I was just wondering because I had heard a few people mentioning it. Thanks :)
