Presidential Scholar Nomination

I was just curious whether there were other Presidential Scholar Nominees on this board ( I'm sure there are a bunch). I just found that I got nominated, but I don't really know anything at all about what it is. Does anyone know what the criteria are for being a Presidential Scholar? I got deferred EA, would this be a good thing to put on the Stanford update?

Presidential Scholar?

From the President of the United States? Or from a president of a company? Or a president of the univeristy? Or a president of a small business? Or a president from your class officer? Or the president of Latvia? Or the president of the ACLU?

I'm betting however, it refers to the Presidential Scholar's given out by a CSU. If I'm wrong, please correct me and let me know which "president. And let your counselor add that to your Mid-Year Report; that's the best place to do it; that way, Stanford won't get snooty that you sent in more documents than required.

Here's a bit about the selection process from the ED site:

"All graduating high school seniors who are citizens of the United States and have scored exceptionally well on either the SAT of the College Board or the ACT Assessment of the American College Testing Program on or before October of each year, are automatically considered for participation. Students who notified ACT or ETS in writing that they did not want their scores released to outside agencies are excluded. Also excluded are students who did not indicate their year of graduation to be between January and August of the current program year.

The U.S. Department of Education then looks at test records for the top 30 males and top 30 females in each of the states/jurisdictions. For each examinee, the SAT score is converted to the ACT Sum of Scores, according to a concordance table. Each individual examinee's highest test score (in a single test administration ) is identified, and duplicates and/or lower scores are dropped.

The combined file of scores from the top male examinees and top female examinees are then ranked from high to low in each state. The scores associated with the top 20 male examinees and top 20 female examinees are used to identify the candidates in each state. When ties occur in the cut off score, more than 20 persons of that gender are selected in that state."

Hm... so a nomination means you basically did really well on the ACT or SAT. Anyway, good luck!

Then it is from the President of the United States?

What an honor.

Congratulations to Senioritis04 (I can't get beside the irony).

As I mentioned earlier, let your counselor know and ask him or her to mention it on the mid-year report.

there was a presidential scholars program at stanford a couple years ago that gave out $3000/year (merit-based), but it was eliminated.

heya, i'm applying to the program too...we started a thread over at the Princeton boards; you may wanna go there

Yeah, I got one too. Jeez, more essays.

Yeah, SERIOUSLY....

anyway, d'you think it's a good thing to put on the deferral update or will they just figure I got it from my SAT score?

the score cutoffs vary by state, so if you have a 1590/1600 they'll know you're in the running no matter what....(actually, the cutoff for california was a 1600, and alaska was ~1540, so it really varies)

if you have any lower than that, then sure, it might be a good thing to mention

argh this is the one reason it sux to be in california--competition! :-/

Well, I'm certainly going to put it on the deferral update, sounds prestigious.

Anyone else happy they had a photo essay like the one on the Stanford app? ^^

LOL I loved how that essay was almost exactly like S's question. GOod luck you guys!

wow you guys had additional essays to write for deferrals? what were some of the questions?

Does anyone know where to find the cutoff scores for Presidential Scholar nominees in different states (specifically NC)?
