Yes I also got one of those letters- I got a 1600 at a sitting of the old SAT. In my city, 4 out of the 9 nominees were from my very small high school! Has anyone else tried unsuccessfully to enter the application website? And should I attempt to tell colleges about the nomination?

^
Send in the nomination info with your midyear report- a great time to send in updated info.

Just kidding... we have 4.

Question: do you have to get a 2400? Or can you get like a 2360 or 2390 or something?

I think they judged only the verbal and math sections, because everyone has been saying it is from one sitting of the test, and I got my 1600 on the old SAT then did about 200 points worse on the SAT with writing, but got the presidential letter. I think the cutoff was different for each state, also.

Is the SAT score just to qualify you to apply, or is it also important for getting semifinalist and/or the actual scholar award? In other words, now that we are candidates how does the SAT score weigh against the other stuff they ask for on the app?

my highest M/V score in one sitting was a 1540, which is nothing compared to people on this forum..lol.

yeah my M/V was 1460 and I'm on the list......gotta love new mexico! Actually, they prolly only considered my ACT which was a 35...I'm pretty sure November SAT's aren't even considered.

jersey in tha house!

I got one of those letters, too. Are you going to use the application online or just print it out? It says that your recommender can submit forms online, too, but I'm not sure if my very inept counselor could handle an online recommendation...

Yeah, I don't think my counselor would be able to figure it out either. I might send it by mail, but the deadline is a "received by" deadline, so I'd have to finish it a few days earlier

You can get less than a 2400. Here in SC I know a kid that got a 2330 and is on the list.

I made it too. And I didn't have any trouble logging in.

i got a 2310 (800M 800V) and i was on the list

I got 1510 and made the list. Unfortunately, my GC sent the midyear report two days ago.

Does anyone know how important the scores are in deciding if you will become a semifinalist (or is it based more on the other stuff)?

I would imagine that they wouldn't care about the scores. After all, if you made it to candidate status, you already have top scores in your state.

Goldfish

Scores are just for the initial screening. The application process involves a boatload of essays, a recommendation, and a transcript, (probably some other stuff but I just glanced over the website) so that's the next bunch of hurdles for presidential scholar nominees, and it's plenty for the committee to evaluate candidates on.

What do you think counts the most -- activities, character, essays, or grades?

I'm not sure what's on the minds of the members of the presidential scholars committee, but one thing is certain: everything has to be stellar with this kind of competition.

Can we complete the application and essays online? I thought I read that we could, but I can't find the online application.
