Is anyone here a candidate, past candidate, or past scholar of the Presidential Scholars Program? If so, what do you know about it (especially past scholars). I just got notified that I'm a candidate, so I'd like to know more about it (especially the Washington, D.C., trip). Too bad it means writing 5 more essays! Maybe it will make Princeton accept me though : ).

I'm a candidate, too, but I don't think I'm going to apply...the application just seems ridiculous. I understand that it's a great honor and all...but I'm feeling incredibly lazy right now (senioritis)!

i'm not a past scholar either (sorry) but i am a candidate this year... and, like btlesgirl, i don't want to apply. too many essays! if the winners got a scholarship i might consider it.

Yeah, there's no way I'm writing more essays. Too bad; I could have won a free trip to Washington DC. . . oh wait.

The results would come too late for Princeton to consider it, I think.
It seems to me that it would be worth trying because much of your competition isn't even going to bother applying.

what is presidential scholarship?

Some award given to ~141 (i think) students based on their SAT or ACT scores. 2600 are nominated. if you win you get to go to DC and stuff. http://ed.gov/programs/psp/index.html

i'm a candidate this year, and I too do NOT want to apply... if al gore was president, hell yeah. i'm probably applying anyway because my parents want me to.

I mailed Princeton a copy of the letter to let them know I was a candidate.

bah . . . bahhhh . . . bahhhh . . . bahhhh . . . I feel sorry for my guidance counselor . . .

congrats everyone! i'm a junior and was just wondering what the cut-off score is to qualify to apply for the presidential scholar program. thanks!

It will depend on your state. If you're in California or New York (a state with a lot of people/higher percentage of top students), you'll probably have to get a perfect score. If you're in Wyoming or Kentucky (lower population/lower percentage of top scores), a 1550 or 35 will probably cut it (SAT/ACT). Think of it this way. For the SAT, you'll probably have to be in the top 40 in your state, for the ACT probably top 20/25 (roughly--it's kind of a guess). They pick the people with the top 50 scores from both the SAT and ACT in your state.

i'm a candidate too...i didn't send out a letter; do you think i should? princeton's the only thing close to a reach school that i applied to, though, so idk...

oh, btw, i'm from NY...cutoff was def 1600. yeah, i'm screwed. :( but being female helps...yeah, chemica, good luck to ya! make sure you take it within the specific window...there's info on the ed.gov site, though...just google it.

wow, i'm replying to my own...how clever...anyway, just to clarify something in Jon's post...they pick 20 top males, 20 top females from each state...but say there's 15 females w/1600s, and 30 w/ 1590s...they take them all...it's top 20+...

my hs had 3 last year which was the first time florida had more then 1 in any school. They went to Yale, Harvard, and Princeton. Good luck with the awards everyone

so do they do SAT scores based on only the verbal and math parts? cuz you guys are saying 1600s not 2400s...

I think it's overall. But remember it's also the ACT. I'm sure I'm a candidate because of my ACT (35), not my SAT (2220 composite).

I was selected for Florida, it seems ok so far, I might write the essays.

last year at least they still chose simply based on m/v...and given my writing score from within that window, i'd say they kept that the same. but they do ask you to report on the semifinalist app, so idk where it comes into play.

i say this b/c although i got an 800 on writing a different time, i scored a 750 for w with my 1600 m/v and i really don't think a 2350 would cut it in ny. just a guess, though...i might be stereotyping a bit.

you may be right zel. in fact, that would make a lot of sense, because I'm pretty sure they don't include the writing from the ACT, so they would probably not include the writing from the SAT. For the record, I don't like the writing section on any test!
