Okay so I've seen some people on CC who are writing Presidential Scholar Candidate on their common app...but I'm a little confused as to how this works, since their website says that the applications are invitation only and (wait for it...) DON'T GET SENT OUT TILL JANUARY. ^_^

So is there any way to know if you're a candidate already? I know the eligibility part says that it's based on your SAT/ACT score...so if you got a +2350 score, is it okay to assume that you're going to be invited and write that on your college app?

In many states you’ll need twin 800’s to qualify. My D1 did, but didn’t put it on her apps, however for RD schools she sent an update that she was invited. The invitation part really doesn’t make that big a difference since schools can see your scores anyway and have a pretty good idea of what it takes to qualify. The larger honors, semi and scholars are based on non-test factors, but aren’t announced until April and May, respectively, so they’re too late to affect admissions decisions. Guess they could help WL decisions though.

anyone know anything about the presidential scholar for the arts? i signed up this past spring, and am currently prepping for it. i will record soon and send in my DVD…can i put this on my app? presidential scholar for the arts candidate?

@ qwt2: see this is what I don’t get! If they don’t announce/send out applications till January, how do you know you’ve been chosen as a candidate? 0.o

Not sure about the SAT, but the link above says:

ffb,
The Arts program is run differently, so I wouldn’t go by it’s calendar. As far as others you know putting down something on their EA applications, if they have a 36 or 1600, they could honestly write down “likely PS candidate”, but that’s about it. As I said before, the gain would be marginal; and if they’re writing something down PS with lower scores, it could be a negative since adcoms know how the program runs.

Some states don’t have enough candidates with perfect scores so the qualifying scores may vary from state to state. Going to Olympic trials is not the same as going to the Olympics: schools already know you have great scores. To say “possible PS candidate” may sound presumptuous.
