yup, so I'm attending rutgers and I got the scholarship. on the website, it says:

^^ The Presidential Scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship Rutgers offers undergraduates. Awards are $21,400 per year for a maximum of $85,600 for four years, and include a $9,900 credit for on-campus housing and dining. For those who choose not to live on campus, the award will be $11,500. Admission to honors programs and guaranteed housing for four years are additional benefits.

soo, if my housing and dining are under, can I use the money to purchase books? or does it just go away?

i also got the scholarship and am attending Rutgers this Fall. The money can pay for books. The only real rule is that financial aid from all sources, including outside scholarships, doesn’t exceed the cost of attendance. Course approved books count as part of the cost of attendance.

If the prez scholarship and Bloustein don’t exceed the cost of attendance, you’ll be able to use both of them to their full value on things like books I think.

Double check the Bloustein - It is not in additon to the Presidential scholarship. My d had won a merit scholarship $5000 but they reduce it to $4000 because she got the Bloustein. Not all schools do this so ask. She graduates this year and this has been true the past four years.

dude no WAY do they give u the left over money…actually for me, there has never been any left over money & i paid about $300 for books each semester
im a presidential/bloustein scholar too and never got nothing…in fact every semester my term bill has been about 4-500 bucks
trust me when i say rutgers sucks everything out of you and will make u pay. yes, 500 bucks is nothing compared to the regular 20,000 or whatever, but still, there is rarely any money left over.
but if what u guys say is true, then i’ve been definitely screwed over these past 2 semesters! damn ru screwwwwww

oh & if u decide to graduate early, the money goes away. they really don’t give u ***. especially since we have the lowest funding from the state in the past 12 years, don’t expect anything.
sorry these are very bitter posts, i just get angry with all the money rutgers sucks out of me. 1.25 for a load of laundry? another 1.25 to dry? seriously man and i MADE out of quarters? haha

wow, I’ll just go home for laundry then.
edit: nvm, mom says it’s not worth it, haha.

alrighty then; thanks for the response.

also, why do books cost so much? are there no used editions available from other students or websites? or do professors require the newest edition? I know new books are insanely priced, but… man.

you can get cheaper books through uloop. look it up. ask around; ask upperclassmen who’ve taken the courses. and it’s not rutgers’ fault that books cost so much; it’s like that everywhere.

and paying 1.25 per load is cheaper than going to a laundromat.

Even at my community college I ended up spending $500-$600 a semester on books. Science books are always super expensive and my school always required the newest editions.

At Rutger’s I’m going to try my best to get everything online & cheap!

don’t get me wrong, i love rutgers! really i do. you’ll just notice they kind of rip you off in little places…for example…i went to sell back a book that i bought for like 80 bucks and they gave me $4! what?! yeah so not cool! i didnt even use it because i dropped the class!
and yeah, 1.25 a load is cheaper than a laundromat, this is true!
i don’t know y books cost so much…probably because they know u need it and will pay anything for them :/
