I'm applying for University of Iowa's Presidential Scholarship, but I didn't reach the GPA requirement. I go to a hypercompetitive school, so As are very hard to come by. I have a 3.49 GPA and a 1480/2210 on the SAT, and I'm heavily involved in school activities and athletics.

So, I'm wondering...Has Iowa ever given a scholarship to a student that didn't completely fulfill the initial requirements? If not, would they?

I assume you’ve already applied. The deadline was Dec. 11. But to answer your question, they do look at applications that do not meet the threshold. We met with an admissions rep in Sept who suggested my son apply even though he didn’t meet the GPA threshold either. It was one of those cases of “one never knows.” The rest of the application PARTICULARLY the essay, could compensate.

Thank you for your information! Yes, I have applied. I’m just waiting in bated breath until the decision arrives!

Decisions on this scholarship are due in mid-January, according to the letter we got in Dec. And remember that this is really a two-tiered scholarship: the Presidential is the larger one but is awarded to only 20 people. The Old Gold is 3k/year and awarded to 300, so you have a 15 times higher probability of getting it than Presidential. The point is that the 2nd prize is not too bad!

And remember that these stack on top of whatever other Iowa scholarships you might receive. They offer quite a few. My son got the 4k/year National Scholars right off the bat with notice of his acceptance.
