Presidential scholarships at U of R

I'm not sure what to think...SCMom said that she read there were 133 Presidential Scholarships given out in the 2007-08 annual report. Will a similar number be given out this year? Will most of the scholarships be given to Richmond Scholars? Will there be many given to regular applicants like me? Will my SAT scores and GPA get me a look or is there just not enough money this year?

I believe those 133 were offers to students, not actual students admitted who received them. If I recall, there was a mixup last year and more students were offered than originally intended, so I would expect fewer offers to go out this year.

Waves, given your posted SAT, I would imagine you'd be a strong candidate. I wish we had presidential scholarships when I was there, as I had a 33, but didn't make it as a Richmond Scholar. $15,000 a year off my tuition would have been nice.

I guess either way, if I get accepted to UR, I going to go - its what I've wanted for a long time. I hope my parents see it that way too when the bill comes. lol

waves, congrats on the decision. Just make sure that you come back on here next year to offer your words of wisdom and experiences to future generations of Spiders.

Hello all---

I hope I will successfully answer all the questions here. I'm sure someone will call me out if I miss any :).

Josie, I'm sorry to say that yes, if you were a RS semi-finalist, but your letter this week said nothing about the presidential, then you are not going to be receiving merit aid. I have no doubt that you (and others in this group) have exceptional records and are very deserving, so I'm sorry that our resources didn't extend far enough to include you.

SCMom, somewhere you read an internal report that told you how many offers were made last year (133), not how many enrolling presidential scholars there were. In anything with admissions, there are always going to be more offers made than students who receive in the end. Just like we offer admission to many people knowing that a certain factor will turn us down (we just don't know which STUDENTS are going to turn us down). The same is true with scholarship money.

We've offered a significant number of Presidentials out of the semi-finalist pool, but we still do have more that will be offered out of the regular admit pool. Those offers will be in admission packets that will be in your hands (approximately) April 1.

We did not do the selection process the same way as last year, so the report that some of you found is not a good guide for what the process was. It was a truly holistic decision process, meaning there were no mathematical formulas that were followed or cut-off test scores. The truth is that we could slice the pool of semi-finalists 100 different ways based on slightly altered criteria and get a different result for individuals, but get an equally wonderful group as a whole. So I'm sorry for those who are disappointed in this outcome. We're overwhelmed with the quality of the applicant pool, and everyone we admit is outstanding and deserving and should be congratulated on their achievements.

Thank you so much for this response. This does still give us hope! We will patiently wait for April.

SCMom - I'm hoping that if I get accepted, that means that UR thinks enough of my abilities that they will take care of me financially somehow. Wish me luck and best to you!

Waves.....first, you do need to chill out; you seem to be borderline manic. Also, are you actually a student?...seeing that you post throughout the middle of the day during the week, when most future UR students are actually in their classrooms.

jomass - I'm not a current student, I am a senior in HS but I'm taking dual enrollment classes as well so I'm on a weird schedule. Sorry I sound "manic," I was only trying to sound poor but determined, lol!

Those who are going to receive Presidential Scholarships from here forward will receive that news along with their admission offers.

Cheers, UR Admissions! :) Thanks a lot
