I am a resident of Florida, but I recently discovered that UF was classifying me as a Non-Resident for tuition purposes, so I emailed/called them and got it fixed after they realized that they never inputted my Green Card. So all this time I was being classified as a Non-Resident; however, I recently also discovered the Presidential Scholarships that UF gives out, but they are given to Florida Residents and they are notified Mid-March. Due to the fact that I was being classified as a Non-Resident, do you think I was being overlooked for the scholarship or if they continue to look at students at this time? I emailed them, but I will be calling them tomorrow.
Does anybody know if my residency classification can have a huge impact on my consideration for the scholarship? Also, does anybody know the general criteria for these scholarships (all three tiers)? This scholarship would be amazing and such a great help since I come from a very low income family (<$20,000). I’m also a Hispanic (a permanent alien) if anybody knows if that would help?
Unfortunately, I think it does. I would definitely call and fight for them to consider you. If you can contact the department that does the scholarship specifically, it would be best. If not, don’t worry too much. I also come from a <$20k and hispanic family and through financial aid, I was awarded enough money to not have to even take out one loan. All the grants covered it. As long as you filed FAFSA before the priority deadline, you should get everything covered through aid.
@evscotti I just finished talking to them, and the lady said that there was nothing they could do since they already finished reviewing for the scholarship. This sucks because I sent them the green card information in November and it didn’t get inputted until now. I really hope they give me enough financial aid! If you are willing to share, what types of grants did you get? Like what was your financial aid package like? Also when did you get your financial aid award?
Given your family’s income, I think you may qualify for the Machen Florida Oppprunity Scholarship which guarantees you a full ride basically.
