Prestige Factor Among Ivys: Penn or Dartmouth?

i know there are many other factors to be considered in choosing a college, but i was just wondering about the prestige level between these two schools..

how do they compare?

upenn (whole) vs. dartmouth

and

upenn (college) vs. dartmouth

why does the 'prestige' level matter? UPenn and Dartmouth are both great schools don't base the decision on which school is more 'prestigious' go to the school you like the most.

Penn is a much more well-known school but in academic circles they are respected on the same level

drew00, that's why i said, "there are many other factors to be considered in choosing a college", in case you didn't notice

i wouldnt say UPenn is known more than Dartmouth. the general public confuses UPenn with Penn State, does that make it less prestigious?

i've frequently heard that upenn is more of a party school.. does that make it less prestigious than dartmouth?

No more than Dartmouth's reputation for drinking makes it less prestigious than Penn.

By all means, Dartmouth = Penn CAS when it comes to prestige.

Penn is more well known, but the sad truth is that many people really do confuse it with Penn State.

how about that harvard study on "revealed preference ranking"? anyone comment on that?

http://post.economics.harvard.edu/faculty/hoxby/papers/revealedprefranking.pdf

I don't completely buy the "Revealed Preference" ranking. A kid who applies to six LACs and Cornell and Penn is probably going to go to an LAC, even if it is a mid-ranked one like Colby. Some students just look for different things in a school, and prioritize those (hence the high ranking of Wellesley and Notre Dame).

i would say that penn = dartmouth.

Dartmouth is more selective, but Penn isn't far behind name-wise, if at all.

Go with the environment you prefer, since theirs are extremely different. I would lean towards Dartmouth.

All,

The two schools are dramatically different in most respects. It is difficult to imagine that it would come down to something as ephemeral as prestige for any college candidate. If it does, somebody has not thought their decision through very well...either that or they know next to nothing about these two schools.

For what they are, they are two of the best schools a-whole-lot-of-money can buy: might be good to find out what they are, rather than what they are supposed to be/u, before buying them.

I love Dartmouth, but that is because of who I am and what Dartmouth is: not what I want people to think I am because of it.

Penn = Dartmouth in terms of prestige. Whether the OP should base his/her decision on prestige is a different issue, but I agree with the above poster's comments on that subject.

Up till about 2003ish Dartmouth had an edge over Penn, but Penn has climbed significantly this past decade. Now Penn=Dartmouth=Columbia=Brown=Duke=Amherst=Williams=Swarthmore in my opinion. I wouldn't choose any of these over another for "prestige".
