Prestige Factor?

Would you say UChicago is prestigious outside of educated circles?

Outside of educated circles, the nearest university with the best football team is the most prestigious.

It takes a certain amount of education to be aware of anything so of course people with more education will be more aware of Chicago. I'd say the average Joe won't know what Chicago is - so if you're name dropping it might not have as much of an affect. On the other hand all of the people who count (employers, grad/law/medical schools) all respect Chicago and people who have ever researched or considered colleges know about it. Really, prestige doesn't matter - what matters is that you are happy about the school you're attending and are recieving a quality education. Besides - you might be pleasantly surprised even when name dropping outside of academia - Chicago isn't as forgotten as you may think :)

chicago is a top 15 school. it has prestige....although, there will be some "regular folks" that might not know how good uchicago really is.
in terms of international, it's widely known. my father who came from korea said he knew of uchicago very well.

granted, u chicago is more known for its graduate schools. their graduate system is top 5 in the nation at worst, only behind schools like berkeley and harvard. because of its such strong graduate schools, uchicago undergrad was always and will be always considered a top 15 school (unlike northwestern who fluctuates)

can you tell i got accepted into uchi and rejected from northwestern?

GOOOO MARROOOONS

My mom, a Chicago graduate, gets (all the time):

"Oh, you went to Circle too?"

This is referring to Circle Campus, i.e. UI-Chicago.

Outside the academic circle, UChicago, from my experience, tends not to be very well known. Many high schoolers I know have never heard of the school. Mind you, I live in Chicago, and these kids live twenty minutes from the U. of C.

haha, i hear ya Icried11times, northwestern sucks. it's all about chicago! :)

then again mention Milton Friedman to people... they are bound to know him, right? Or how about "nuclear bombs".... I'm sure they know what those are... anyone every read "Cat's Cradle," or had a Susan Sontag quote in an English paper?

haha, I JUST wrote a paper in AP language based on an excerpt by Sontag. Funny.

with felipe, its not j ust coincidence, he knows everything about you, your family and especially your pets.

In the business and college/university environs that I have traveled these last 25 years, I can assure you that Chicago is not only well known, but in many circles considered without peer.

What is interesting is how well marketed the name Chicago Circle (UIC) has been in the city of Chicago. It hasn't been called that in many years, being phased out beginning in 1982. But, here are some other reasons why the folks in Chicago may be a little UIC centric:

An estimated one in 10 Chicagoans with a college degree is a UIC alumnus. (Many many more attended without graduating.)

Approximately one in six Illinois doctors is a graduate of the UIC College of Medicine.

One in three Illinois pharmacists is a graduate of the UIC College of Pharmacy.

More than 40 percent of the state’s dentists are graduates of UIC’s College of Dentistry.

Plus, they have a good sized teacher education department.

Many people like the school and its urban mission. A friend left a tenured position at Harvard to join the UIC faculty.

Ha me too!
