do you think that uva is more prestigous than WM?

To the people who matter, they're probably about equal (at the undergrad level only.) People in the know see them both as being very, very strong academically. UVA might have the edge in terms of on campus recruiting, but they're both fairly good in that respect.

what about as far as law schools go?
is UVA law better than WM law? and if so, would you have a competitive edge as far as going to UVA to get into the law school there?

UVa law is much better than WM law. I'm not certain but I seem to recall reading an article that said the law school does not give preferential treatment to UVa students.

UVA Law is substantially better than W&M Law. Going to UVA as an undergraduate probably wouldn't give a huge advantage to an applicant who is applying to UVA Law, although being an instate resident would. What matters most in law school admissions are GPA and LSAT, though, so major in something you like and can do well in.

For Class of 2008:

UVA: 46

W&M: 10

I think in certain circles they're pretty equal in terms of prestige, but for the layperson UVA has a substantial edge.

William and Mary produced four presidents, while UVA only produced one, if that helps.

W&M Grads: Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, John Tyler, and George Washington

UVA: Woodrow Wilson (law student)

So if you ever talk to someone, and that person asked "where's William and what?...", you can say "four US presidents went there", and he'll be like "WOW!". And just among those four dudes, you got two secretaries of state (TJ and Monroe). And + Edmund Jennings Randolph and Henry Clay makes it four! So four presidents and four secretaries of state. That's gotta inspire awe.

Back in the colonial days, I'm sure Harvard was the W&M of the South and W&M was the Harvard of the North. LOL!

"Back in the colonial days, I'm sure Harvard was the W&M of the South and W&M was the Harvard of the North. LOL!"

Switch those around.

zhonggong is an established troll. Leave him be.

zhonggong: hmmm. if w&m is so awesome, why did jefferson feel the need to found the University of VIRGINIA?!

oh yeah, stupid me. REDO:

"Back in the colonial days, I'm sure Harvard was the W&M of the North and W&M was the Harvard of the South. LOL!"

am i the only one who finds it funny that whenever w&m is brought into comparison with uva, w&m students seem to mention that w&m was the most prestigious school in the country...when there were only 2 schools in the country.

no one cares that you had 4 presidents graduate from there over 200 years ago.

that's a good question. To answer this, let's first answer this question. Why declare an independent USA when UK of B and I was prefectly fine???????? (I'm not pro-British and I'm not British in any sense)

I mean sure, the taxes, but it's not like they were excessive; after all, the Englanders saved the colonials from the French and Indians, so it was neccessary that they chip in a bit. Yeah Boston Massacre, but like 5 people died. And Samuel Adams really made a Mt. out of a mole hill out of that. So sometimes people just do things and they just do it. Not always rational. Now, Mr. TJ was a scholar of the Enlightenment, a Deist, a loyal pupil of rational reasoning and John Locke. But he still slept with his slave; I wonder what he was philosophizing in his mind as he was in the act of the licentious love....When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one man resolve his animal instincts, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the lewd pleasure to which the Laws of Nature and of Natures God entitle him, a decent respect to the opinions of mans urges requires that he should declare the causes which impel him to the ejaculation.

how are these last couple of posts even relevant

You're annoying, zhonggong.

well, we're trying to determine which is more prestigious, UVA or WM. A valid argument is that if WM is so prestigious, as proven by it's production of 4 presidents and 4 secretaries of states, then why did TJ, a WM graduate, found UVA in the first place? My response, to the best of my ability, is that there is no objective reason to Mr. TJ's decision. Guess we'd have to dig him up and interview him if we REALLY REALLY wanna find out, but better do it before May 1, coz that's the national college reply date.

^^^Quite possibly one of the most idiotic posts I've read on CC. I salute you.

Oh Zhonggong, if you must know, Jefferson wanted to create a truly "American" school for the newly established republic of the United States. He thought the education at W&M (and Harvard & Yale for that matter) was antiquated and thus said re. W&M, "We have in that state a college just well enough endowed to draw out the miserable existence to which a miserable constitution has doomed it." (Thankfully for W&M students, the school has improved in the last 200 years.)

Incidentally, UVa is the first school in the country to have an elective form of education, where students could take whatever classes they wanted rather following a prescribed rigid plan designed by someone else - a program espoused during Jefferson's time by Harvard, Yale, and William & Mary, which lead Jefferson to also say, "To stop where we are is to abandon our high hopes, and become suitors to Yale and Harvard for their secondary characters."
