Prestige vs Cost

So I'm deciding between prestige schools (UChicago and Dartmouth) and a full-ride (UGA biz school). I would be an econ major at UChic and Dart, and a banking/finance major at UGA. I know that the networks at Dart and UChicago are significantly better for getting a job, and that having the name of either of these two schools on my resume may help me in various ways for years to come. My family is too Asian and lived the American dream too well to get any financial aid from Uchicago or Dartmouth. However, my parents are willing to pay for either UChicago or Dartmouth even at sticker price. What do you think?

You should be asking your parents this question. If money is no object, most people here would say take Chicago or Dartmouth in a heartbeat.

The educational experience at either Chicago or Dartmouth will almost certainly be vastly better than that of UGA. If your parents are willing and able (and that means no significant hardships, preventing younger siblings from going to college, etc), go to either UChicago or Dartmouth.

Given what my parents have hinted at from how much we make, I don’t think paying for four years at UChic or Dart will be that hard for them.

Also, I know that HYP, from their huge endowments, have very generous financial aid. What about Columbia? In the off-chance that I get off the waitlist at Columbia, I will probably go there. If my family regularly makes about ~$250k-300k/yr, is it a safe bet that I won’t get any financial aid barring other extraordinary circumstances?

I would agree, if you can afford it I’d go to Chicago, Dartmouth, or Columbia (if you get in) over UGA. Given your income level, it is doubtful you’d get financial aid.

Your family is too Asian? Friedman?

For a career in business, especially high-end Wall Street jobs, there is no comparison between Chicago/Dartmouth and UGA. If money is no object, it’s a no brainer. Keep in mind this advice applies to business, not necessarily other majors. Other careers, i.e. engineering, you can get where you want to be with a UGA (or similar) degree. High-end business employers tend to focus more on prestige.

Haha. That refers to MILTON Friedman.

If your parents make $250k+ and are comfortable with paying sticker price at Dartmouth or Chicago, I would definitely choose one of those based on fit. Both are excellent for banking/financing. UGA is not even comparable.
