Everyone debates who gets to be on the top of the "lower ivies" pile (of everyone but HYP)

It seems to me that Columbia wins the battle for best of the worst most of the time.

I'd still take Penn though :)

At undergrad level, how far is the Columbia science/engineering behind MIT, Caltech?

5.23 yards

please stop asking stupid questions

"5.23 yards" - LoL

i agree though, these things cannot be measured, let alone quanified. If you ask me personally, i'd say mit and caltech, have students more inclined into the sciences, and more high up and recognized profs. although we have a fair share of hardcore/nerdy kids and brilliant profs, also some great research opportunities. But in terms of an education, columbia's all-roundedness, and the diversity of people you interact with trumps the other two. this is purely subjective. many of the seas kids, don't actually go on to work in industry or pursue an engineering doctorate, many will work on wall street/ go to med school / some to law school.

1/3 eng job or degree
1/3 med/law school
1/3 i banking/finance

there's like a 5% "other" in there too but the numbers are close enough

I think Brown should be considered the fourth ivy. On the undergrad level Columbia is more than 5.23 yards behind Brown.

Were all my questions stupid? So sorry then.. But i'll still continue asking whatever that i want to know.. Stupid or clever they are..
So do you guys mean the science/engineering program aint too far behind, it's Columbia after all.. And since it's only 5.23 yards..

"I think Brown should be considered the fourth ivy. On the undergrad level Columbia is more than 5.23 yards behind Brown."

talk about being delusional! :p, jk, brown's a good school, just has one too many hippies, and no requirements whatsoever. they might be marginally more undergrad focused (columbia undergrad is pretty undergrad focused), but that isn't all there is to an UG eduction. if it was wouldn't that make LACs better than the top research univs?

columbia is definitely a great school and prestige shouldn't be an issue when choosing between top universities...i'm loving it here so far. i will admit, however, that in terms of scientific output and achievement, nobody beats MIT and Harvard.

Nobody except Bovine University

UC Berkeley and Stanford are able to compete with Harvard and MIT for scientific output.

scientific output - i'd definitely put caltech up there if not above them, probably above them, because per capita, and undoubtedly per undergrad, caltech churns out much more.

it's not nice to talk about Dartmouth like that.
