Prestigious Competitions in Essay Writing and Science

<p>I've been looking for contests that I can enter just to add something to my college applications, and I obviously want to compete in something that I'm good at. For me, this is essay writing and also science.</p>

<p>I was wondering if anyone knows about any prestigious or well-known essay writing competitions? I've looked online and literally can't find anything that seems prestigious... </p>

<p>As for science competitions, I know there are several like the Siemens/Intel/Google contests, but I was wondering if anyone knows of contests that are more test/knowledge-based as opposed to research? It would be better as well if you can compete without the support of your school or anything like that.</p>
