what are some prestigious private colleges?
the ivys and what else....

stanford, mit, caltech, rice, duke, georgetown, northwestern, uchicago, and johns hopkins are probably the most prestigious non-ivies (private)

Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona- other LACs, too

Hey, USC should be up there.

Colleges that include Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Emory, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Northwestern, Rice, Stanford, UChicago, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Washington University in St. Louis are all very prestigious private (non-ivy) institutions.

Tufts University, New York University.

Hmmmm....I always worry when someone begins a thread with the word "prestigious." My version of prestigious and your version may be entirely different. Not to mention that "prestigioius" doesn't always guarantee that a school will be the right school for any one individual. It's kind of like getting ready to buy a car and asking "Which car is the most prestigious?" What does it really matter if, in the end, you can't get the darned thing to work?

don't forget Carleton

I don't think Carleton is very prestigious, sorry.

Your absolutely right, Calidan. Carleton attract students who like to learn for learning's sake, not those who choose schools because they believe in top 10 lists. And, just for fun, why don't look up the numbers on Carleton's graduate placements and those who go on to PhDs?

Carnegie Mellon?? Rated w/Best Job Outlook straight out of college..

Plus there is a lot of dedication and hard workers at that school. UVA also.

Look at the CC list of top schools by going to college forums. It has a forum for each of the top schools in a category.

confidential: UVA's a public school, so it's disqualified from this list.

I'm not too certain about USC. It's a great football school, but beyond that? Prestige? I'm sorry.

calm down carlmom lol. people on this site need to not take comments so personally. its because of people like carlmom that every thread turns into an ugly battle. prestigious does NOT mean academic strength, i dont understand why people constantly confuse the two. carleton is a wonderful school it just is not prestigious. im sorry. lol. there are only a handful of schools in the US that have prestige. prestige = common man knowledge. i dont even consider williams and swarthmore to be prestigious. the only LAC that really has prestige is amherst.

'the only LAC that really has prestige is amherst'
the good chance is, if one knows about amherst, then he/she will know about Williams and Swartmore

i dont think amherst is known as a "good school" to the common person but they have HEARD of the school. most people at my school know of amherst and knows its relatively good, just not as good as people on this website make it out to be; however, most of our students/teachers/even guidance counselors dont even know of williams or swarthmore. of course the people who matter (business recruiters) will know of these schools, but the average person (which is what prestige means) will most likely never heard of either

Prestige has several meanings. To me, prestige means universities that are respected by top corporate recruiters at "employers of choice" and by top intellectuals and researchers. By that reckoning, any of the top 25 or so private research universities, top 10 or so public universities and top 25 or so LACs are considered "prestigious".

to put a disclaimer on alexandre's list.. prestige can also very a little bit by field. For example, a Cal Poly SLO engineer might have as much prestige as a UW engineer.

Its also tough to make a list based on job prospects, because engineering and business schools are always going to have better job placement than LACs and universities that stress arts and sciences.
this is why confidential is right in saying that carnegie mellon has the best job outlook, because its big on engineering, but that doesnt necessarily mean that its a better school.

For many liberal arts majors, UCSD is as good of a school or better than UCLA or UCB (and probably some of the other publics, i dont know too much about them).

and one final note, this thread is retarded. whoever started this is doing a total disservice to people looking for colleges. Only long, exhaustive lists like the one Alexandre made, which still can leave a few schools out, are useful, becaues only that can provide a good picture of the really broad scope of places that juniors should be looking at now.

If a GC has never heard of Williams, he's not doing his/her job....All they need to do is look at the rankings lists....It's top ranked every year...

sorry to be askin this here, im an intl who doesnt know much abt LACs in the US... is wesleyan a prestigious school in the US?
