Prestigious Scholarships for Juniors?

Thank you for your help.

Does your school have an awards night for seniors? I went to my daughter’s and was surprised as the number of little scholarships awarded from the local civic organizations. They weren’t for a lot of money, but it all helps. One was from the local bar association for a ‘safety video’. The one that won, and I swear it was probably the only one entered, was about shining lasers in the eyes of pilots. It was really stupid, but it won. Essay contests from women’s groups, art contests, photography contests from local businesses, the American Legion, the flower club.

My kids were seniors so it was too late for us, but if I’d had a younger kid… Most are really easy to apply for and most have little competition.

Yes they do, but I am a junior currently

Yes, but if you can volunteer to help, you can see what groups are giving awards. I’m sure your GC has a list too, but my kids never got the message.

We had transferred to this school and didn’t really know how it worked. D2 didn’t even get invited to the awards ceremony as she didn’t turn in her scholarships. A guy who got the exact same scholarship as she did got his at the ceremony (and dropped out of school a month into freshman year). D1 was recognized for one of her scholarships, but not for her merit one. It was really a mess as a ceremony, but I did learn about the local awards.

One caveat is that most of the local scholarships could only be used in Florida, so if you are looking to go OOS it may not work for you.

@studentathlete18 the poster above has the right idea. I started going to our high school senior awards night when my D was a freshman. I took notes of what scholarships were given out and the criteria for winning. The next year she came with me :0 She won several thousand dollars, so it was worth our time in the long run.

@NJRoadie wow that’s awesome! thanks for the tip!

“there aren’t really scholarships for kids younger than HS seniors.”

Actually there are some but they are very hard to get. See here:

@coolweather thanks for the link and tip but math isn’t my strong suit:/

There are COMPETITIONS and SWEEPSTAKES and CONTESTS but not really scholarships in the form of "list out your stats, write your life story down, we’ll give you money just for that* – not nearly to the same magnitude as when you’re a senior.
