Does going to programs like RSI serve as “extra early admission” for MIT? I’ve seen tons of threads with “oh, RSI, 100% chance at MIT” etc. Is it really that much of a hook? Obviously with a 5%ish admission rate they’re no joke and the students are obviously of the caliber but is it as much of a hook as it seems?
P.S. Not trying to put it down, I’m just curious.
P.S. What summer camps are that caliber?
Correlation is not causation. Maybe students that have the stats to get into those programs are able to get into top schools too. I don’t think any summer research program is able to guarantee admission to HYPSM.
I agree with @Shinpachi. Regarding your second question, I believe TASP is also considered to be on the same level as RSI.
It is recommended that PSAT math scores be at least 76, and combined math, critical reading, and writing PSAT scores be at least 220. ACT math scores should be at least 33 and verbal scores at least 34. Lower scores must be offset by strong indicators of mathematical, scientific, and academic potential exemplified in recommendations, high school grades, and science activities. From RSI web site, not a shock that kids get HYPS. That is national merit range
@SaphireNY … National merit doesn’t get you even close to HYPSM. Even Brown eejects 3/4 36ers(1/1000). I’m asking if the rates are really at that 70-100% range and if so, why?
The scores aren’t it…
I mean think about it, a program like RSI is probably very comparable in competitiveness to HYPSM - if you get in RSI you’re probably a stellar candidate (and if HYPSM see RSI on your application it’s probably confirmation for them).
