Preston vs Patterson

My daughter is entering fall 2019, she is interested in Preston Residential College but I’m not sure if she’ll be overwhelmed by all the togetherness requirements there. She also likes Patterson Hall. Does anyone have info about the two?

I currently live in Preston and it is a really good option for first year! It’s super affordable and is in the literal center of campus (right across from the library, horseshoe, and Russell house) so you’re about a 5-10 minute walk from the furthest parts. They are very community oriented at first but after that it’s like any other dorm where you can be as involved as you want without being forced. They’re not actual requirements, you just get a few perks of being in a residential college like taking classes within the building, your own dining hall, and being able to have your own clubs and events within the hall. The rooms are also HUGE and pretty nice too

Thanks, Kaylaamorel

@kaylaamore2000 Thanks for info re Preston (you also replied to me on different SC thread).

Have you heard anything about International LLC? Maxcy, I think. D thinks it would be fun and interesting to be housed with students from abroad.

People who live in Maxcy love it. It’s really good if you plan to study abroad because you’re eligible for other scholarships if you continue to live there. I’ve heard your roommates change by the semester sometimes because the international students are usually only there for a semester.

Interesting. I think my D would still like that, and she is very interested in Study Abroad. Thanks for info

Does she plan to join a sorority? I only ask because if so, she’ll be required to do the Greek Meal plan in the spring term as well as have the meal plan at Preston–this is an issue for some of the kids going into the spring semester right now.

^ not sure if this is for me or carolinamom97 … My D was super interested in Greek life. Now she wants to wait for Spring rush to see how her friend group develops and get a feel for campus life without that pressure.

I know many colleges rush before school starts and it seems to work fine, but I think that’s a lot to ask of incoming Freshman who don’t even know how to get to class yet!

@g8rmomk8ans
Yes she thinks she will rush…would Patterson also be a problem as far as the meal plan thing?

No, Patterson is fine as it doesn’t have it’s own meal plan. It’s just a tough transition and one that they don’t explain very well prior to rush–you go from eating all of your meals on campus and then have to eat them at the sorority house which is quite a hike from most of the dorms. It’s my daughter’s first week in the transition so we’ll see how it goes. I’ve basically told her to eat at the house as much as she can but we’ll just pay for the meals she has on campus. If your daughter can choose an LLC in Patterson I think that would help her get a spot there–just know that a lot of kids don’t get their first (or even second or third!) dorm choice, so she should try to keep an open mind about all of it. Good luck to her!
