I have already been accepted to a school so im not worried i wont be going to college or anything, but i am just a little confused why i got waitlisted

i have also taken the hardest classes my shcool has to offer (4 APs my senior year)

your test scores are kinda low

I got accepted with the following stats:

770 CR, 690 M

3.15 GPA, 1 AP Class

Excellent EC’s, including Class Prez, Debate Club Prez, Top State Debator, Newspaper Editor in Chief, etc.

Decent essay.

So yeah… I dunno why you got waitlisted.

the sat scores put you, dbentley_511, just shy of the middle range I believe. They had a lot of applicants so that 580 and 630 push you to the maybe category. youngrel1, your scores seem well within the range (770 is amazing).

Waitlist? I didn’t even know that AU has a waiting list!Has anyone been placed on the waiting list if so when did you hear?

Like mowgli stated, your SATs are really low, especially compared to your GPA. This could have sent red flags up to the admissions office that your grades are inflated.

but in all the books i have looked at my sats and acts were pretty much the average, not “really low”. my math was in the upper range and my act was in the upper range. oh well. nothing i can do now. its just a little annoying i have worked this hard and have little to show for it

Your test scores really aren’t that low for a school like American. Your stats overall leave me pretty shocked that you would have been wait listed, as mine are a little lower but I got in for Spring '09. I’m not incredibly thrilled with my American situation either, but yours makes me mad… their admissions office is bizarre. Where else did you apply, though? I feel like that won’t happen again…

I’d have to agree that your SATs did hurt you. But, if you really want AU, you should let them know. Did your application give you the opportunity to tell them how much you wanted AU? I know that when my daughter applied to schools last year (not AU, we are looking at it for my son for 2009) there was not a place on most applications to make your desire to attend apparent yet schools want this. On some applications, she was able to find a place for it, but on most Common App ones, there really wasn’t a place for it.

So when I sat at the AU info session last week I was troubled to hear that AU looks for that specifically in the essay. Since most essays would be pretty boring if they addressed “how much I want to go to _____” I am not sure how you fit that in.

Bottom line is - you now have several weeks to write a really wonderful letter about why you want AU - if you still do once you get your acceptances at other schools. You could also ask you GC to call the regional admissions rep. Some GC even know the reps personally and they can get a good idea of where you stand - if they are willing to share. Waitlist isn’t death - my daughter got an offer from a waitlist school last year and it was a tough year too. But, I wouldn’t count on an offer.

You might also use the letter to focus on one particular aspect of your experience or interest that AU fits well. You have a very lenghty resume so I would not simply add more things to it but I would try to find one or two things that you are absolutely passionate about that you can develop at AU.

I am no expert on this or AU, but I’ve read a lot on this and think that someone really motivated should take a shot during this time period. It can’t hurt. Good luck.

I got in with a 540 M, 600 W, 700 CR…college admissions can be random sometimes..

I got waitlisted with a 2030 SAT (730 CR, 730 W, 570 M), 3.92 GPA and tons of ECs and leadership roles. Doesn’t really make any sense…

I can hardly believe you didn’t get right in.
But There are probably different numbers needed for different programs.
For example, SIS program is pretty competative.

Hope your financial aid category didn’t affect you…

Where in NH do you live? I live outside of Manchvegas and I received an acceptance package with similar stats.

I do need a considerable amount of financial aid to be able to attend, so maybe that affected the outcome. Oh well! C’est la vie… Congrats to everyone who did get in!

ryanwaslike- i live in northern nh, 1 hour north of concord, by loon mt.

thank you for all the responses. i got into clark with a lot of financial aid and the presidential scholarship so everything is good. i probably wasn’t going to go to American anyways, so im over it. i guess i’d rather have someone who really wants to go to the school get in over me, who really doesn’t care too much.

again thanks for the responses

dbentley: Good luck at Clark! I visited it with my D a couple of years ago, and I was impressed both with the school, itself and the students there.:)

For Marioula -

Your numbers are pretty good although the big jump between math and CR might be a problem. When I first read it because of the order you posted it, I thought writing was the third and lowest number. AU does not consider the writing.

However, you may be one of those caught in the “she/he might not attend here because they will get into a higher ranked school” scenario. Which I know can happen if they did not get a strong enough sense from your application that you really wanted to attend AU.

BTW, we were told at our info session last week that it does not matter what school you apply to in terms of your acceptances. Don’t know if that is accurate or not.

outofstate, that’s true. unlike many other universities, you are admitted to the university as a whole, and from there can choose your major/school/program etc. You don’t apply directly to the SIS, etc.

I really don’t understand why you didn’t get in. American is really odd this year. I have a friend who still hasn’t even received a letter from them yet. I also have a friend who got in with a 27 ACT and another with a 1280 SAT. It almost seems random. Was your application late at all?
