Pretty good Rec Ctr Pool pics, other pics, misc info

Someone recently PM’d me and asked for pics of various facilities (pools, libraries, rec center, etc) at Bama. I was able to find some pics, but I’m still looking for others…

Pool links below - see ***
**Rec Center’s Outdoor Pool Complex **
-Multi-purpose pool with Lazy River
-Open Tube Water slide
-Separate Toddler Pool
-Two 25 yd Lap lanes
-Separate Shower Rooms and Family Changing Rooms
-Bama Dining Snack Bar

Rec Center’s indoor pool area

Aquatic Center pool area (which also seems to have a small weight room)

**Honors Riverside Residential pool **

Found this link for the pools *** [The University of Alabama Student Recreation Center](http://urec.ua.edu/aquatics-facilities.cfm) - if you scroll down you’ll see all four pool locations.

That pic of a small weight room is at the Aquatics Center; that’s not the very large weight room at the Rec Center. (I know, confusing)

The very bottom picture is the pool that is by the Riverside housing.

But, I haven’t found any good indoor pics of the Rec Center. When I find them, I’ll post them.

Others feel free to post links to facility pics.

mom-you are my personal hero…I would know nothing about Bama without you

LOL…

Well, I’m still learning, too. I get PMs from people asking about this or that, and then I do some exploring and see what I find! :)

I didn’t know about the Outdoor trip calendar, and I came across the pics of the pools (which weren’t easy to find - at least for me. LOL) One thing led to another. While looking for the rock-climbing wall, I came across the Bike info.

Thanks so much for the Bama Bikes link! Someone mentioned that during the Parent’s Panel on Saturday and I’ve been meaning to find it. Saved me a search :)

For those who won’t have cars on campus…

Bama has Zipcars…**

Faculty, staff, and students may join the Zipcar program for a sign-up charge of $35 and then can drive for as little as $8 per hour or $66 per day weekdays and $9 per hour or $72 per day on weekends. The Zipcars are available to all students, faculty and staff ages 18 and over. Gas, maintenance, insurance and reserved parking are included in low hourly and daily rates.

When you consider that having a car on campus costs about $250 per year for a permit, it’s not too much money to “pool” costs with friends when no one has a car to use.

[University of Alabama News Zipcar Launches Car Sharing Program at UA](http://uanews.ua.edu/2009/08/zipcar-launches-car-sharing-program-at-ua/)

Zipcar allows students to use cars on an hour-long, daily or even a weeklong basis with rates that vary according to the day of the week. Zipcar’s system allows students to join and then reserve a car when they need one.

Once the reservation is confirmed, the member can use their card, or Zipcard, to activate and unlock the reserved car, said Zipcar spokesman Jaime Quick. The keys will be located in the car along with a gas card.

Ronnie Robertson, UA director of transportation, said discussions about a possible partnership with Zipcar began in May.

“Now, I think we’ve completed a full transportation circle,” Robertson said. “We have the Crimson Ride, 348-RIDE through the night, and now we have Zipcar if students need to get off campus.”

[Crimson White - Zipcar comes to UA](http://www.cw.ua.edu/zipcar-comes-to-ua-1.1822528)

Is it advisable to bring a car freshman year? Zipcars looks convenient, but it might be cheaper to just bring a car if they’re needed to get around town.

I don’t know what the percentage is of who has cars and who doesn’t. I know that when my kids came home for fall break and for Christmas, they drove a few other kids home who don’t have cars on campus. My younger son even picked up 2 old hgh school classmates at UAB and brought them home.

The car issue is mixed. Some families can’t afford to have an extra car on campus, because they still have a teen at home that needs one to get to school and sports.

I think that if you live within driving distance and you have a car, feel free to bring it. If you don’t have a car or live too far away, don’t sweat it. Either you can use the Crimson Ride to get you around campus, to Publix grocery, and to The Strip, or bum a ride from a friend/roomie that has a car, or if absolutely necessary, rent a zipcar or call a taxi.

When students go into town, they rarely go alone, so typically one will have a car. Students tend to travel in groups! My son said that when he goes to Sams Club, he always brings other kids with him.

However, if your child brings a car to school, insist that he never let anyone borrow it. Too risky.

It is not necessary to have a car, but it isn’t a bad thing either (assuming you park legally so you don’t rack up the $50 and $250 tickets). I know one person who used Zipcar and they liked the service, I didn’t know it was so costly though.

I don’t think freshman need cars. Actually, in my opinion, freshman shouldn’t even be allowed to bring cars on-campus. That alone would solve a great deal of the parking problem on-campus without the need for more lots or decks.

However, the more senior you are, the more a car is a necessity. This is due to the need to go out and about more, not just socially, but for internships, jobs, etc.

I don’t think the cost is too bad…That $35 is a one time charge.

It includes gas and insurance.

If 4 people split the cost, an evening out (about 4 hours) would be $9 per person. Not too bad. It would only be necessary on the rare times that none of the 4 had a car on campus.

It wouldn’t be something a person would do all the time. But, if you only used one 3 or 4 times per year, that would still be cheaper than the parking decal (which is about $250 per year).

I heard at the beginning of the year that they’re thinking about not letting freshmen have cars on campus, but I seriously doubt that now with the new Ridgecrest deck.

Honestly, a car is pretty nice to have. Like I’ve said in other threads, if you like to go home on the weekends or need to get somewhere on mcfarland, it’s pretty nice to have. Otherwise, you can just walk to the strip or publix if needed.

Let this thread be a info thread not a comment thread. Ok? Thanks. :)

I didn’t know you had control over what gets talked about in a topic. Not to mention you only say this after I say something. Hm…

I don’t have control of this thread, which is why I made the request for this thread alone.

My previous post had nothing to do with you particularly. I saw that as people were posting comments, it was cluttering up the thread (as this post will, too :frowning: )

I created this thread as kind of a “go to” thread for people to find links to various things that they may not know exist. If people post comments here and there, it will make the thread have too many pages and make it difficult for people to “wade thru”.

I’m sure that you and others can understand that. :)

Another thread reminded me about the Observatory
