I'm a New York HS senior, and I pretty much know what colleges I am applying to, but am in search of one more. I want to make it a lot different from the other ones on my list, which are generally urban schools in the northeast. I'd like for it to be a safety for me, and also have the following characteristics:

-In the Midwest/West
-In the middle of nowhere, or with a small town. An obscure state would be nice (i.e Montana, as I would like to live somewhere i probably would never live otherwise)
-Very nice/pretty campus/surroundings.
-Decent Political Science or Journalism Program.

My stats are as follows.
SAT: 1280/1600 or 1930/2400 v: 660 m: 620 w: 650
GPA: 3.3 first 3 years of high school, but over a 4.0 this semester
Good essay/Recs
EDIT: Tough course load.
Weak EC's

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For both political science and journalism, usually you can find good programs in state capitals. Check out some of the colleges that are in state capitals in some states that you find intriguing. Considering the type of states you're considering, I think you'll find colleges that would work as safeties.

University of Utah (although it's in a big city)
University of Colorado
Gonzaga (located in eastern Washington, really really close to Idaho)
Colorado State
Indiana University
Michigan State
University of Kansas
Oklahoma State
University of Oklahoma
University of Nebraska
University of Iowa
Iowa State
University of Oregon
Oregon State
Washington State
Boise State
University of Idaho

I'd also add University of Montana (that obscure state!) especially if you are interested in journalism. I think their English/journalism programs are pretty good, and Missoula is a wonderful college town with a definite Western feel. There are a number of posts on the U of M on other threads here if you look. U of Oregon also provides a fabulous journalism program in beautiful Eugene. Good for you, considering some "different" options at this exciting time in your life! Good luck!

Ohio university-athens fits what you want perfectly.. gorgeous campus, the college has more ppl than the town and they have a top rated journalism program.

I second the U of Montana in Missoula. Visited in October with D. Beautiful town. UM has a school of journalism-good rep, I think. Campus is gorgeous. I have posted a few comments about UM. With your stats you'll probably be accepted to the honors college/pres scholarship, etc. They have rolling admissions, so you'll find out in about 3 weeks after applying. Good safety at the very least. My D has already applied and will likely attend.

Check out their web site. They have a fabulous football stadium and lots of school spirit, if that interests you.

I'd add University of Missouri-Columbia. It's an absolute safety--strictly numbers driven, and yours not only get you into school but the 1280 gets you (on the nose) into the journalism program as a freshman. One of the Top 5 journalism programs in the country no matter whose rankings you look at, and number 1 according to many. Columbia has about 115,000 residents (30,000 of which are MU students or students of two other small colleges located there). Very nice campus.

Because you are a New Yorker and a boy, I believe Lawrence U would be a match for you depending on your complete stats. That said, it is small town America, excellent political science faculty, and certainly not the east coast. I've heard it's a place where rabbits run wild, people are very friendly and everyone lives on campus. Large international contingent, some stray east and west coasters and a few Texans and southerners, and many midwesterners. Flights run right out of town so you can get connections to go home easily.

I know this is an old thread, but I found it when searching for Puget Sound. Rilokiley=Rockin' SN. Jenny Lewis is amazing, and I wish I could relive the last Rilo concert I went to over and over...
