Okay, so I'm an OOS student. I'm from Arkansas. I signed up for Preview Day, but does anyone think it would not be worth my time to go? I would miss 2 days of school, 2 days of IB... :P I don't mind, because FSU is in my top 2... But should I just go to orientation instead (assuming I choose FSU)? My dad says he'd drive us... But, I don't want to make my family go all the way to Florida if it's not necessary or...worthwhile. I'm sure it's worthwhile...but...? I've already seen the campus once...last summer. Anyways, I'll stop now and see what people think. Thanks! :)

It may help you decide whether you want to attend FSU or not.

I would hate for you to jeopardize your academic work for preview. I think you will enjoy the event and get a better feel for whether FSU is where you want to go but it is not mandatory to attend preview. We did not attend preview and learned everything we needed at orientation.

If you are seriously considering FSU I say go to Preview. For each daughter we did this and considered the time and expense worth the investment.

Hmm, my family would have to drive 900 miles... Still go for it? If I go there and I leave without all/most of my questions answered, I know my parents won't be too pleased. Is Preview too crowded for some good question time?

I'd look at the cost of flying vs driving that far.

What we did was make an individual appointment with an Admissions officer and Honors or whomever. This way you get individual attention. When you're competing with lots of other candidates and their parents for the attention of staff and faculty it can be more difficult. However, we all tend to ask the same types of questions, so you can still get good information.

Yeah, I'm also flying to U. of Maryland at College Park later on, because that was simply too far to drive. With FSU's Preview Day... I'd have to take into consideration lodging for overnight and all that as well. I dunno... Would communication through email be as effective, or...? I would love to go, I just don't want my dad to take two days off of work and for me to miss two days of IB and, blah blah if it won't be truly worth it. :P

Wouldn't you rather be a Seminole than a Turtle? :)

lol, turties are cute. Terrapins. That's a fun word... :P But no, I'm just a typical confused senior in high school. So you say go for Preview then? :)

Yep. It's worth the investment if you are undecided. "Fear the Turtles" ;)

There's a UM grad in my office so we discuss football from time to time.

I'm not attending Preview, just Orientation. However I've already visited the campus twice (once tour, once mainly for dorms) and know I'll be attending FSU. I found visiting FSU on my own time gave me a much better feel of the campus, like I belonged. The tour felt like a rushed taste and took up too much of our wandering time so I would be worried Preview would be the same. I'd imagine Preview would be great for any unanswered questions but I've also found their e-mail respondents to take their time for well thought out welcome replies (if your going to Preview is more for questions than another feel of the campus.) Even living as close as we do (central florida) the pinch on the pocketbook from the hotel stay has placed Preview on the sidelines.
Although if you are seriously still on the fence I'd definitely advise another visit through Preview or on your own. More you visit more you will be sure of your decision, whatever it may be.

A high room bill can be a deterrent for preview, but try Priceline. We got a nice room at the Residence Inn only blocks from campus for $50 per night. Plus it includes a free hot breakfast that is really not bad at all!

Now that you are accepted, you can do the following:

lol, I've already done #3 actually. To be safe. =)

Just got back from Preview!

Any of you who can go to preview, I really encourage you to do it! My d and I went and are so glad that we made it a priority. (We drove 6 1/2 hours each way from our home to Tally.) It was so worth it! (We left for Tally on Thursday at the end of her school day.)

We were able to talk to reps from the departments that she is interested in majoring and minoring about coursework. Now, she has a much clearer picture concerning the classes that she wants to register for at orientation.

We were able to learn first hand from students who had done the study abroad programs in which she has interest.

Plus she got her FSUID and is also set up with her banking account with Suntrust that is linked to her card. (We won't have to deal with the super long lines at orientation).

As we explored the campus on our own, we met so many wonderful helpful students who couldn't do enough to make sure that we "weren't lost" and were finding what we needed. The guys were always opening the doors for us - yes, we were back in the south!

She already loved FSU before we went, but she is even more revved now for August to get here!

So to all of you who wondered if Preview Day is worth it. My dd and I say a big "Nole Yeah!"

SKIBIRD - thanks for the positive review on PREVIEW. I am sure this information will be helpful to many.

skibird thanks sounds ike a great time. question - did they tell you when the pre registration listing of courses will be posted on the fsu website so students can begin ti plan out their schedules for summer and or fall? did they have a list available for your daughter to review?

The courses for summer and fall 2008 are supposed to be listed Monday, 2/25. We are anxious to start planning for the upcoming semesters as well.

Yes, 2/25 is when the courses should be available.

great! thanks for the info.
