Preview NU

How do you check/know if NU will cover your travel expenses?

I think if you call the Undergraduate Admissions office and confirm that they did offer to cover your expenses, they'll refer you to their travel agent who can help you get set up.

I'm Going on the 23/24th!! Hope to see some of you guys there!

If I can get a roundtrip plane ticket for less than the ones I've been looking at (which are $400, gah!), I'll be going to the April 16-17 one. I've already registered, but my mom says that the price is ridiculous, since we went in February for like $124 roundtrip. And NU won't cover mine. So...we'll see. But, I'll most likely be there. Can't wait to see you guys! =]

Where are you from lovely? that price seems ridiculously inflated.

this is strange. i called admissions and they said they never offered to cover any one's traveling expenses for Preview NU, even for FA qualified students.

is someone on CC being deceptive, or is the admissions office lying?

is there any way we could ask for them to cover it though?
the cheapest I'm finding from Philly to Chicago is $224.

JetX, I'm wondering the same thing...

That is really weird and equally disconcerting. While I have no experience, I remember reading in posts long ago (when I first got on CC) that NU paid for students to come check out the school on one of the preview weekends.

This is not good PR for NU. The students on CC have no reason to make it up so it would appear that there is a conversation to be had with admissions.

We need Laura R to weigh in here.

WildLion 82, where are you? We need you to get the skinny on this one.

Arbiter213, I'm in Florida. Airfare is apparently extremely high. =[

JetX and everybody else who's wondering...I called the Admissions Office inquiring about the alleged airfare offers. The woman I spoke to told me that, if your airfare was to be covered by NU, it was included in your financial aid package and that it was quite obvious if you got it. So, if you don't know whether or not it applies to you, it doesn't apply to, basically.

That's how I understood it, anyway.

As for my attendance at Preview NU, unfortunately...I don't think I'll be able to make it. But maybe I can convince my mom that I'll pay a bit of the airfare! Meh.

They are covering it for me. It might be that they are giving it to the kids who are Founder Scholar (this merit scholarship that they started this year). I mean I was offered free airfare to visit Duke as well for receiving a likely letter (same offer from Emory too).

Here is the exact quote:

"As further incentive, Northwestern University will pay for your airline transportation costs and registration fee for the April 23-24 program and/or April 22nd visit. This travel offer is ONLY valid for these dates. If you choose to join us for one of the other two Preview NU programs, you will need to cover the cost of travel on your own, and there will be no Sunday option available. Please click on the Preview NU link on the left side of this page to register for the program of your choice."

GAh, bought my ticket today (from Los Angeles to Chicago)... for $334. Not too bad I guess. But then again, I have to take a redeye flight.

mahras, I'm debunking that theory. I got a Founders Scholarship, but they didn't offer to pay for me.

S2530S2-If you haven;t already-try Southwest airlines-They have hubs in both Chic. and Calif. I understand they offer some really good flight deals from time to time.

I'm trying to find cheap tickets, and it simply isn't working. $309 is the one I'm on right now. I tried calling my mom, but she got all snippy and said, "At lunch! I'm at work!" So, who knows: it may be gone by then! Argh.

Wow, this is bad luck!

Everyone has to make their own decisions about their particular feel for a campus. Having said that, I think the vast majority of those who have been to NU would tell you that it's gorgeous.

If you can't afford the air fare, look at pics on the web and see if you can get a feel for it. It won't tell you about Evanston (although they may have their own website with pics) and this is less than ideal, but I'd hate to see someone not choose NU because they hadn't seen the campus. It's beautiful!!!

Attending preview on 4/23-24. A tip: priceline took an offer of $69 for 4 star hotel in Evanston, there is only one and it is adjacent to the school.

Swarthmore, Wash U, and Harvey Mudd are both paying for me to come out to visit, but NU offers nothing. NU also offered the lowest package - I guess just because they can . . .

Is it that beautiful? But I heard most of the time the campus (and Lake Michigan) is covered in snow. How would you describe the social scene compared to Dartmouth?

Have you visited any of the colleges yet, ElphDriver? Unless there's a specific thing in NU that appeals to you, I'd go to Swarthmore or Washu (it's gorgeous!), depending on how much FA each offered.

Or you can ask NU if they can increase the amount in package.

JetX, "most of the time" is a very big statement. In Chicago it snows usually from the beginning of December until the end of February, but there's really only 2-3 big snowfalls. This year for example, we had snow like on December 2, then it melted and didn't snow again until January. It was pretty lame, and then we didn't get snow until January and it was just a little. So it does snow and it really is BEAUTIFUL, but really it isn't all that bad around here. Just be prepared for the cold if you're not used to that.
