does anyone know why there's a 20 dollar per person fee? i was looking at the schedule and i dont see why its there. i mean, im paying it, but what's it there for?

They feed you! shrug

Food .

It does NOT snow most of the time! The lake effect snow hits on the other side of Lake Michigan. Once in a while, Chicago will take a hit, but that's not typical. Lake Michigan is very deep and, therefore, not frozen enough to be snow covered. It does get cold though, no question.

NU has a beautiful campus, JetX.

Dartmouth has a very pretty campus too. Very different environment though because Dartmouth is smaller and it is in a more remote sort of location. I can't speak to the "social scene" there although I've heard a few rumors. You'd be better off asking that question on their board.

I know that Northwestern recommends 3 subject test ... do they have to be in different subject areas? Will math level 1, level 2, & literature sufice?

Uh, just a tiny note, it may have helped to create a new thread for your question, because this thread isn't about subject tests at all...and you may not get as many replies as you would if you posted it in its own thread. But, I believe that the general rule of thumb is that you take the subject tests which go with your area of study. I also would probably not take Math Levels 1 and 2. Just choose one, preferably Level 2. But if you've already taken them, that's probably fine. I only took two subject tests (Math Level 2 and US History) and was admitted (granted, I was admitted for theatre, which isn't really the concentration of ANY subject tests).

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to Preview NU April 16-17. My mom seems to have decided that she'll get me plane tickets, no matter what the cost. Her coworker might even have a free one to give me. Random.

dont take both Math Level 1 and 2. just take one of those. try to show NU you are comfortable in a variety of subjects (go with a history, language, or science instead of another math)

I only took two (US History, Math 1) and did horribly on US History and still got into NU. For NU, DON'T stress about SAT IIs. They seemed very lenient about them.

I got into NU and didn't take any SAT IIs.

thank you for the replies ... I am new to CC and did not know how to create another thread

If you couldn't figure out how to make a new thread, you may have trouble getting in to NU ;)

I have a severe problem with Preview NU right now...I feel like as one of my top two choices (vs. Duke) I wouldn't be fair to choose right now because I had a long opportunity to speak with and walk around with Duke students last week but every time I've visited NU it's either been break or a weekend, so I've never spoken to anyone there. However, I just got back from a trip to find the only date I can go (23-24) is now full. I sent them an e-mail saying this, don't know what to expect. If nothing can be done, should I still go to the day programs and such?

You should call the admissions department and speak to a real person. You should tell them that you've been accepted to Duke and that you would like to visit and attent preview nu before making your decision. While it is unlikely they'll be able to get you a dorm space overnight, they should be able to squeeze you in. It is always better to speak to a live human being (get their name) in situations like this. As well, emphasize that you're making a choice between a school with which they compete for students. "Squeeky wheel..."

i don't know if they would let you go to the programs and such if its full -- i hope so! -- but if you absolutely can't go to the programs or spend the night i would try to find a current nu student who would take you around and let you stay with them. that almost might be better than preview nu.

Definitely call. I had the same experience last fall with Discover NU and they were able to sort it out. I spoke to either Tiffany or Christy if that helps. They really ought to be able to figure something out. Good luck and let us know what happens.

If NU won't work anything out for you, your choice is made and you need to let them know that they lost a great potential student to Duke because of their inflexibility or unwillingness to accommodate or whatever you are feeling.

Good luck.

My son registered for Preview NU for the 16th but the airfare is too expensive and the 23rd is booked. I was wondering if anyone out there is signed up for the 23rd and would be interested in switching. I don't know if they would allow it, but I thought it was worth a try.

I will be going to Harvey Mudd this w/e, then to Swarthmore next week, and (whew!) to NU for the 4/23-24. Lots of travel squashed together, but I figure I will know what to do at the end of it all.

Wash U has offered a 1/2 scholarship for all 4 years, and said it wouldn't matter what happened to my parent's finances, but I won't be getting anything from NU after this year because my father just finished college and got a job last month! That's okay, I have a feeling I will be taking out loans to cover the difference. The Integrated Science Program at NU sounds outstanding.

ThinMint, what happened in your situation?

I didn't know about the Discover NU program until I found out about it on my own by hunting around the website. By the time I found it, there was no room at the inn, so to speak. I called and talked to someone (Tiffany? I can't remember) and they were able to find me a host student. It wasn't the greatest because she was a freshman who'd been at the school for only like 3 weeks herself, but the experience gave me a basic feel for the dorms, etc. I was able to do all of the Discover NU offerings, no problem. They were taking registrations at the desk the day it started - it was the overnight that was the challenge. Talking to a human will, I hope, make a difference for you, too. Everyone was very obliging and willing to help me figure it out.
