PREVIEW of U.S. News Top Ten GRADUATE Engineering Schools 2014

On March 12, 2013 U.S. News will release their rankings of graduate schools. They have released a list of their top ten ranked GRADUATE schools of engineering. They are NOT in ranked order. That will be published on March 12.

Here is the U.S. News top ten GRADUATE schools of engineering for 2014 IN NO ORDER

California Institute of Technology
Carnegie Mellon University
Georgia Institute of Technology
Massachusettes Institute of Technology
Purdue University
Stanford University
Southern California
California at Berkeley
Illinois
Michigan

will they ever have rankings for pure CS?

The usual suspects. I’m surprised that USC has developed its engineering program that much though.

I am also surprised to see USC on this list…

I am a Grad student in Engineering at SC. The probable reason for us moving up in ranking this year could be that last 12 months has been really good for engineering . The money has been coming in, Professors inducted into the Highest societies of engineering ( a criterion for US news rankings) and maybe, another reason is that our DEN ( Distance Education Network ) program , that is the online masters program, is ranked 1. That system, i can speak from experience, is amazing and a real help to both on and off campus students.

Just my opinion though !!

Go Boilers!

Is USC undergrad Engineering strong? It’s one of my top choices and it’s very close to where I live.

The USC School of Engineering has been ranked highly in the past. U.S. News ranked it #6th in 2004, 7th in 2005 and 7th in 2008. Huge donations have made it possible for the school to move forward with state of the art buildings, new labs, library additions, honored faculty, additional research facilities and even more selective student body. It is the home of two National Science Foundation engineering research centers, four NIH centers and the first university based center of excellence by the US Dept. of Homeland Security. Another DHS center has been added. A few of the other centers of interest are the Stevens Institute for Innovation, the Center for Robotics and Embedded Systems, the Tsunami Research Center and the Center for Interactive Smart Oilfield Technologies.

Some of the donations include:
Andrew Viterbi----$52 Million
Dan Epstein----$11 Million
John Mork----$15 Million
Anonymous----$20 Million
Ming Hsieh----$85 Million
Sunny Astani----$17 Million
Ken Klein----$11 Million

A variety of majors are offered. Two dual majors are popular. They are CS/Bus. Administration and CS/Physics. One of the most sought after majors in Viterbi is the CS/Games major in conjunction with the SCA interactive entertainment major. That major is ranked #1 by Princeton Review and features the advanced Game Pipe Laboratory.

Some of the honored faculty are:
Sol Golomb
Sansit Mitra
Leonard Adelman
Barry Boehm
Robert Hellwarth
Yannis Yortsos
P. Daniel Dopkus
The late Tony Maxworthy
Ted Lee
Maja Mataric
Alan Willner
Shang-Hua Teng
Terence Sanger
Azad Madni

The student body is among the most diverse in the country. The Women in Engineering program supports female engineers, which number around 30% of the student body.

Alumni from Viterbi head many of the largest companies in the U.S. and abroad including Qualcomm, Occidental Petroleum, Sinopec (China), Con Am, Cogent, Wind River Sequoia Capital, Astani Enterprises, Arasor, SAIC, Northern Light Venture, Capital, Gill Corp, Energy Corp of America, Reynolds Group and the Shea Company. An alumnus heads NASA.

The Viterbi School is participating in the NAE Grand Challenges Scholars Program with Duke and the Olin College of Engineering.

What type pf engineering r u interested in ?

I’d be curious for the 10-20 spots. The top 10 ‘usual suspects’ contain no surprises. Interesting clustering, too.

Wow, what a shocking list.

(sarcasm)

Interesting that USC is ranked higher than UT-Austin and Cornell when its faculty is so much weaker. It will be interesting to see the other components aside from academic reputation and NAE membership that affected the overall ranking.

I want to major in Computer Science.

Darthpawner,

Computer science is pretty strong at SC. I highly recommend the program. I know for a fact that the Grad program is brilliant, and program like Game development (under Computer Science) is one of the best in the US/world. If you are into things like, Computer networks/Quantum computing, you will have opportunities to learn it. Interact well with faculty, then in 4 years time, you will be in a perfect position to exploit the increasing job opportunities in the field. Competition from Indian/chinese students will be ever present, but they are partly a reason why the program at SC is so strong

Hope this helps

P.S : I am a Mechanical/Aerospace grad student.

Awesome! Thanks for the info Arjun  I have been a USC fan throughout middle school and high school, so I’ll wait until the end of the month and see.

Just a quick sample of the fellow engineers that work next to me at the No Such Agency…and ALL are contractors:

University of Dayton
University of Miami
Morgan State University
SUNY Binghamton
University of Maryland - College Park
University of Maryland - Baltimore County
Ohio State University

and myself…Michigan State University (BS)/University of Wisconsin (MS)

Can’t believe that Purdue and USC are ranked higher than Cornell and UT Austin…Cornell and UT Austin have better faculties and students in my opinion

That just shows how unfamiliar you are with Purdue. Purdue has an absolutely first-rate faculty and program.
