So i previewed the common app after I filled out everything.
The last few words in the Activities section of Details and accomplishments were consistently cut off the right margin for each activity.
Will this happen when the colleges see this? And how can I send this to, lets say a mentor, when the end of the sentences are cut off?

I had this problem also. This is what the commonapp website says:

My text is cut off when I preview my application.

Once you reach the character limit for the space given, you will not be able to type or add any further text. If you preview the page and see that some letters are cut off, you should attempt to shorten your response so this does not happen. There is limited space on the form, so it’s possible all characters will not fit.
There are some areas on the application where the text may be within the limit for the field, but still gets truncated on the form. Because there is limited space on the application, you can add anything that gets cut off to the additional information section. The schools are aware that there is limited space on the application.
If you need to add further information, please do so in the Additional Information section of the application.

Keep in mind that the “preview” that you see is exactly what colleges see. Whatever is cut off will be cut off for them too.

Wow thanks. This is pretty important
Guess I have to shorten them now -_-

really??? so then why do they allow you to type more information in the activities or extra info section that colleges wont even see??

what if the information on the “additional information area” is what is getting truncated?

Hahvad, if you are finding that you need more space than the form allows you, then you may need to upload a document with your additional information on it rather than typing in your additional information.

Do the details have to be in full sentences, or can applicants simply write phrases?

For additional information, phrases are certainly okay.

It’s a good question. Take a look at these three lines.

iiiiiiiiii
wwwwwwwwww
ssssssssss

Each has 10 characters, but each has varying length. The font on Common App is not fixed-width, so what displays will depend on the characters used. The system can enforce a character count, but it cannot measure the physical length of a response. In addition, hard-returns eat up more than one character space, and cutting/pasting can often eat up space. That’s why you are advised to preview your app and edit as necessary.

Incidentally, colleges can still access everything you write, since they can import each field of your application. But to make sure they see it on the printed page, you need to preview.

Here’s what a JHU admissions officer told me:

@WinstonWolfe: this is very useful.
thank you.

ok, thanks for the clarification

WinstonWolfe is correct.
